Question What types of work is available in Tenerife?

¡Felíz Pascua!............Happy Easter

Not sure whether this should be posted in this part of the forum but here goes anyway.

Hi All. We have today told the in-laws about our intention to move to Tenerife. My father in law was very happy for us but the mother in law was sad as she will miss us all .

My F-I-L said i wouldnt have a problem in finding work within my line of work (Technical Manager for large house builder in UK) given all the development in Tenerife at the moment. i went on to to say that i probably wouldnt be able to continue with my current career path as it will be extremely difficult to break into. I told him that i would get any job out there in the interim to bring some money into the house and also rely on savings while i can look for a better job. My F-I-L said that i would be better off going to live in Mainland Spain as there is a greater selection of industry than in Tenerife. I couldn't argue with him as i don't have the knowledge but i would never accept what one person says as gospel, so here are my questions, which i would appreciate some help with.

1. Is there a need for my primary line of work in Tenerife?
2. Is there a wide array of other industries?
3. What did people first work as when they arrived in Tenerife and what do they do now?

As always i thank you in anticipation.

cheers

keith

please take the time to read all the posts concerning wishing to move here and please take your time thinking about it and discussing it with your family as for the first year or two while you all settle in will be stressfull.

there is a need for good managers in the building trade but very very good spanish is needed and it is hard for expats to breakin to unless the company is foreign owned.

not really mainly tourism, services and construction and a very few manufacturing companies.

timeshare rep(do not go down this road unless you have a brass neck) now i work in a pub.

good luck in whatever you do and welcome to the friendly forum

hi okeefa, we too did what your thinking of doing and when we first came over we just did anything to bring the money in, we have allways been fortunate and got work but not doing what we really want to do, my husband is in the building industry which there are allways jobs available, but being a nurse myself i cant carry on with my profession as you need to speak fluent spanish to get in the hospitals. anyway most people change their professions on the plane coming over to tenerife ie. you could be a milkman back in the uk but suddenly become a carpenter here!!!!!! we have been here 4 years now so its worth a try so good luck with your move.

if i read all the posts about moving over, i wouldn't get over until 2028 i have read a lot of the posts though and am even more enthused by what i have read. we accept it will be hard work but it has to be worth it in the long run.

that is very much as i imagined and although i am learning spanish i can't see me being quite fluent enough), so plan b will have to be devised.

timeshare isn't a real option for me, i have been on the rough end of it and couldn't do that to anyone. presumably bar work (not wishing to demean your chosen job of course) wouldn't pay enough to keep a family?

thanks for the advice and you are right this is a friendly forum

thanks for the encouragement dede, i am wondering whether the jobs available pay well enough to keep a family though? (2 kids and the wife(although she can work part-time))

could i be cheeky and ask what jobs you do at the moment, if you don't want to broadcast it pm me.

Unfortunately you may have to and for 1000- 1200 Euro per month.. Think carefully if you have a family as employers here work on the always someone else if you don't want the job... Have you thought about self employment.. or try to fix something up in your present line before you take the plunge and move out.

Good luck ..

wise words, this is the reason for my many questions, i guess it is very difficult to set up something beforehand, the question is where to start. it would be with developers i reckon but again my spanish would have to be top notch to bag a good job.

can one really earn 1000-1200 euros digging holes?????
