Go to the town hall and ask for a 'convivencia'. This is the equivalent of common-law. You can then take this along with your boyfriend and his social security, nominas, etc etc to the social office and they will give you a card that says you are entitled to social health care based on his contributions.
I had one for me and the kids based on my bloke's contract and we're not married.

One thing to say though, if you're planning kids... although you get all your gynae appointments etc with the social doctor, you will have to go to the mojon for them and the waiting's terrible. We had all those appointments at the Green Hospital at 60€ a pop once a month, then got all the blood tests etc done on the social (as some of them can cost up to 200€ privately). The reason for this is a) less waiting, b) a translator, should you need one... and for medical stuff, this can be handy and c) more scans! I got one every time I went and now have loads of fab pics that I show the kids occasionally... 'This is you when you were in mummy's tummy'
Well worth the price, IMO

To be honest would prefer to keep my private gyno, but he has said he will support me with my info etc., I wish I could afford to do it all private but it's just not possible. Even living in the north is easier...2 years ago my boyfriend(after much pestering of me!) went to a private clinic to look at the mole on his leg(even though he had social he had such little faith he'd saved 500 euros to be seen privately). The clinic took one look at it, wrote him an urgent letter to be seen staightaway by a dermatologist, refused to charge him for the consultation and a week later they had operated......they did a fantastic job, turned out it was a tumor, thankfully benign, but he did have to travel from Arona to the university hospitol at least 3 times a week. Mojon is just down the road from me, and as I'm not working time is not a problem but I get quite nervous when I think about trusting them with anything to do with an unborn child....that's terrible isn't it, but a friend of mine has had some really bad experiences in the local health centres. like I say, Iwill probably have to compromise!
I find the local health centres fine, TBH. My local one now has a paediatric nurse that speaks perfect English, as he's just finished studying in the UK!
That was a shock when I took my daughter for a checkup recently, I can tell you! especially with all the signs saying you MUST speak Spanish or have an interpreter...
The same goes for my doctor... studied in the UK, speaks perfect English... and they both preferred to speak English too, so they can practise it!

I know, I got quite a suprise once at Mojon when I accompanied some friends as a translator, but I do find always if you make an effort to converse with them in spanish they will try thier best to help too, but I have met really rude nurses aswell. Sorry, another question....I live in Arona village, should I be going to the Town Hall there? I feel really dense not knowing this!!!! Never really thought about it long term really, but when you start wanting kids you have to don't you? God, don't tell me I'm growing up!
Kids are great though... I bet you saw Liz's baby and got all broody, didn't you...
(I know I did, but I don't have anymore bedrooms!)

yeah, been spending some time with the two of them, she's a little angel.....and Liz is doing fantastic with her. Thank you for all the advice, these things seem so daunting until you find some-one to point you in the right direction.
