Question Healthcare, Social Security and Employment Contracts in Tenerife?

Sorry if these questions have been asked before - I have searched the forum but haven't found my answers.

I'm moving to Tenerife scarily soon - number of days is now nearly in single figures! I have a job and so will be paying into the social security system. Am I correct in thinking that I cannot use state healthcare for the first three months of paying social security? And that for those three months my EHIC (E111) will cover me? Would you recommend getting private health insurance for those first three months?

Or am I wrong & I'm actually covered straight away?

I'm also having trouble finding out exactly how much my social security payments will be as a full time permanent employee? I think I've done a pretty good job of predicting my tax deductions but I need to be able to work out what will be left of my salary each month so I can budget properly.

Please help. Thank you xxx

Unless you are self employed then your employer will pay your social and tax. The amount of social your employer pays depends on the amount of hours you work.

this is a hard one to explain as you are not here yet.

your e111 will not cover you as you are working here.

you cannot pay social here as you do not have a n.i.e. or a home with a contract yet. you will need these to apply to join the social security system of which you need to apply in person.

social security does not cover you for the first 3 months of health care or the first 6 months for unemployment benifit(different rules apply for self employed).

you will have the following deducted.(this changes depending on the work you are doing).

1. tax
2. irpf(unemployment retention)
3. social security payments

these all depend on what your employer tells the relevant agencies what your wage is.

in most cases you will be given a one month trial then a three month temp contract then a 9 month temp contract after wards you should be offer´d a full contract which is negotiable between you and your employer.

in the end if you calculate to loose 20% of your wage you should have a nice suprise when you get paid.(15% is about right but better to over calculate)

hope this helps.

p.s. most employers as daverock said will pay this for you as part of your contract. so call them and find out.

I see what you mean that sounds very complicated. I am fortunate enough to be starting with an "indefinido" contract and my employer will help me with my NIE as soon as I arrive. 15 - 20% deductions sounds good but I already calculated my tax alone to be more than that over the year. I was working it out on 15% for the first 4,000 euros, then 20% up to 13,000 euros etc. Maybe I missed personal allowances that I'm not yet aware of? I should probably wait until I get there and see how it rocks but I want to know how much I can afford to spend on rent as I'll only have a short time to find my lovely apartment.

Do you mean they will deduct this from my salary before they pay me or you you mean I might not have it deducted at all?

So if I can't get healthcare either from the state or on my E111, presumably I should get some medical insurance sorted? Aargh - so much to do so little time to do it....

Thank you

This is most unusual, I have never heard of someone being offered an indefinido from day one - especially since you are not even here yet. Personally, I would be cautious.

Normally when a wage/salary is agreed, that will be how much you will actually receive. Your 'gross' wage will then be calculated starting from 'the end result' as it were.

You cannot get private health cover for a period of less than a year.

I'd love to see things from your point of view but I can't get my head that far up my bum.

Nothing to stop you taking one out for a year on a monthly payment basis and cancelling it after 3 months. You would need to check their cancellation policy though in case the rest of that year's premuims had to be paid.

mike is correct it is very unusual to get an indefinido when starting a new position as the cost to the employer to have this contract cancelled is very expensive so please check it out before coming over and ask for a copy to be e-mailed to you.

i came over on the promise of an indefinido to find out that i would be working self employed and under commision only with a certain time share company.

your tax and other deductions will be taken from your wage before you recieve it but your wage normally reflects this and local cost of living.

as for the health care it is a double bind but it is to discourage people coming here to work illegally.

you will however always be cover´d for emergency medical treatment.

I've heard of this happening before, so it can clearly be simply a ruse to lure people over. Be careful, and Robby is totally correct ... any genuine employer offering a genuine contract, indefiinido or otherwise, should have absolutely no problem at all in letting you see in advance what you'll be signing when you get here.

Thanks Guys.

Please don't worry about my contract as it's all legit & I've already seen and signed it. I'm just trying to get a handle on the costs. I didn't give a thought to healthcare until a couple of days ago, I guess I just assumed my EHIC would cover me.

Do you know if my social security contributions will be an actual percentage of my wage?

Hmm, I like your idea about health insurance Daverock - get one that I can cancel - I'll look into that...

Just make sure you read the small print regarding the cancellation policy.
