Changes to the law regarding autonomo's in Tenerife
On Friday 29th September the Spanish Government approved the first draft of law of the Statute of the Independent Worker.
More than three million independent workers (autonomos) will enjoy a level of social protection similar to wage-earning workers.
For example, they will be protected in case of illness, industrial accident or professional disease. They will also be entitled to maternity and paternity benefits.
Children under 30 years old working in a family business will benefit from reductions in Social Security payments if they are self-employed, although what is described as a ‘moderate’ increase in payments will apply to everyone else.
A payment similar to the unemployment benefit will be paid when a business closes or the self employed person’s activity stops – although no details are given.
This is designed to acknowledge the contribution to the creation of wealth in the country and to give self employed people similar protection to those employed.
Similarly, if a self employed persons contract is terminated without good reason, they will be entitled to compensation.
These measures will become law and will take effect when approved by the government.

I'd love to see things from your point of view but I can't get my head that far up my bum.

I noticed I was entitled to sick benefit when I signed on last month... didn't know it was a new measure, or that there were other introductions either! Ta for that!

Thanks Mike, yes we got the letter and leaflet explaining it all, took me an age to work out the spanish! But I think I got most of it. Thanks for clarfying it in English though - much appreciated. Might pull a sickie next week (only kidding)
Just seen this thread. My husband had an accident at work. He is autonomous. He went to the doctors. It was a right performance. The receptionist didn't know that FREMAP covered him under social security payments, neither did we at the time. They refused to let the doctor treat him as it was a labour accident. I ended up paying out at the Green clinic for treatment to his eye. when I found out about the FREMAP thing I went back to the doctors, receptionist said sorry and he eventually got a baja for one week. He was paid out just over 109 euros for the week. It took almost a week for me to sort this out. It wasn't worth the hassle.
Much confusion with social security and entitlements and payments! Even our asesor fiscal got it wrong almost cost the arm and leg we were trying to sort out! Result changed the asesor fiscal, much to her shock. What I made a mistake and you want to change?

Hi, I am autónomo myself, and not sure if you are aware of this discussion going on under many Spanish circles, but loads of people I have spoken to believe that autónomos are one of the worst by the Government protected collectives.
Someone told me some time ago that the new measures were not really this good...
In any case, pay close attention to who you choose as your asesor fiscal. I had a problem with one myself and almost had to pay a penalty due to his incompetence. The tax laws are very complex, and if one needs advice, it is essential to have someone with a deep knowledge, particularly as the requirements can vary a lot according to the economic activity carried out...
By the way,
to my knowledge you are entitled to a sickness leave payment in direct proportion to how much social security insurance you pay. That is, if you pay the minimum and you get ill, this minimum amount established is what you will receive if you get ill...
Also, when you choose a certain modality (i.e. paying a certain amount for social security), a specific time needs to pass before you can change into another modality.
All these are important things to know. It is a shame that, many times, also at the Administraciones, only pieces of information are given to the user, where a good amount of workers have the 'funcionario mentality'...
