hi all

i have been asked to attend a work meeting out of work hours, this is no problem although the requested day happens to be a day when i have other arrangments (not my day of work) my manager has requested that everybody should attend this meeting (unpaid) and that if we cannot attend to provide a sick note

is this legal?

dont know if it Legal !! but depending the reasons for the meeting then it might be better for all staff to be there ? so i guess i would ask the content of the meeting first !! and ask for a different day off to do what you had arranged
As for a sick note !! think you can be off 3 day without a sick note!! but check that out!

As an hourly paid employee, you cannot be MADE to attend a meeting. You also do not need a sick note, you self certify the first 4 days of any sickness abscence.

Legalities aside, it sounds like a fairly important meeting.

I know it can be a bummer if you have to attend work meetings out of hours.Is your job important to you or is it a fill in untill you get something better. Always Always remember your work history follows you every where. It may be better to bite the bullet and attend.

hi all and thanks for your replies, i probably will attend the meeting although i just wanted to know where i stood legally. i actally enjoy this job although i only do it a couple of hours a week (i have another job aswell)

i just felt that the demand for a sick note for being unable to attend a meeting was a little out of order
