Will I lose my entitlement to Spanish National Health now I am unemployed?

We have lived in Tenerife for 18 months. 1 am aged 63 and worked in Tenerife as an electrician for the last year until I had a heart attack, I have a social securiity number and received excellent treatment on the Spanish National Health. As I am no longer working because of this, will I lose my entitlement to Spanish National Health in the future? Can I and should I register as unemployed in order to preserve my right to Spanish National Health Treatment ?. If so how do I do this and where would I apply?

Sorry - I can't answer your question, but I think that you will need to go and ask.

You may find the answer to your questions if you can navigate the INEM website:

www.inem.es

but probably better to go to the office and ask them.

It's in Los Cristianos - I can't give you the address ... but if you know where Correos is ... walk a little bit further down (with Correos on your left). You will see some steps - go up them and when you get to the top walk to your right and you will see the queues of people that will identify that you are at the right place

Remember to take a ticket and be prepared to wait 2/3/4 hours.

I think that it's on the ground floor of El Verodal

Don't interrupt me when I'm ignoring you!

I'd love to see things from your point of view but I can't get my head that far up my bum.

What happens if I stop working?

If you have paid contributions in Spain for 90 days during the previous 365 preceding days (ie you have worked legally or been self employed and paying Spanish national insurance contributions for at least 3 months in the preceding year), you are covered for the next 90 days after you stop work.

If you were being attended to before you ceased paying contributions then your cover is extended to 52 weeks for the worker and 39 weeks for the dependant and 39 or 26 weeks if the assistance commenced after you stopped paying contributions . source: http://www.seg-social.es http://www.diana-mcglone.com/health.htm

Yes you should register a unemployed to extend this cover- but you may qualify for disability cover if you cannot work because of your heart condition as said above go talk to them.

As the previous posters have said you need to get some serious advice here as you will only be covered for so long, but then again you may be entitled to some type of disability allowance. I would go to the INEM office and the social - you could also consider going to the CCOO union office in the Valdes Centre as they will know the law to the letter - advice from them is free.

Just to thank everyone who responded to my post. I have now managed to get it sorted. The information may be of use to fellow forum members.
You are only allowed to 90 days benefit of any kind once you stop work.
However you can contact the UK Pensions office and request a form called
E121.Once you get this and complete it,Take it to the INSS who keep the form and register you onto the system, This transfers all your UK benefits from the UK to Spain. You get a spanish medical card so as to register with a doctor. You can then request a spainish EHIC card ( old E111 ) for when
going back to the UK or any were in Europe.Hope this is usefull. Thanks again
