Heavy rain downpours brought chaos to the capital Santa Cruz & La Laguna in Tenerife

Thursday's heavy rain in Santa Cruz and La Laguna has once more shown the vulnerability of the two cities to flooding.

The downpours lasted just a few hours but brought chaos to some parts and even caused trams to be suspended due to flooding in tunnels. Basements and ground floor premises were also badly affected in some districts and the emergency services were stretched to the limit for most of the day. The Met Office has again come in for criticism for underestimating the force of the rain and not giving proper warning of the freak downpours, which fell just hours after the government lifted the bad weather warning which had been in place for the previous 24 hours.

According to the news, 60 litres per square metre fell in one downpour. Think it's a lot.

This could be why the Orange network was down yesterday then?

I'm not normally very supportive of the met office ,but this time they did get it nearly right. I new the weather forecast for thursday was heavy rain at least 30 litres m2 . The problem is that many people don't see the local news chanels and rely on information from other sources.

Who remembers the bad floods in Santa Cruz, ooooow, maybe 6-7 years ago, when the port area was flooded. It was Easter Weekend?

I remember that!! I had my Mum on the phone panicking asking if we were OK, I told her we lived the other end of the island.

Was pretty bad up North yesterday - my boss went and said that the water was coming up past the wheels of his car. Seems we got off pretty lightly down here.

I had just gone on holiday and new nothing about it. We arrived in our hotel, it was Bangkok, and put on CNN and Tenerife was the top story. It showed people being swept down streets, everything.

We thought it was candid camera or something, it just didn't look real.

Hopefully that will never happen again.

By all accounts it was really bad up there yesterday.

I never saw any weather warnings, so although at 6 30am it was slightly raining in El Medano, I put my washing out thinking that it would clear up
