Aren't there a lot of mosquitos and flies during the hot weather in Tenerife!

Unfortunately the heat seems to have brought out the resident mosquito population. I was sat out last night on the terrace most of the night. I was wearing mossie repellent, I had an electric plug in insect zapper and an insect repellent coil was burning on the table. Despite all that I have 10 new bites this morning.
I have noticed that you do get a lot more insects and flies over in Callao, compared with Los Cris. Due I am told by locals, to the Lava rock, between El Puertito and Playa San Juan. Thats why the local older villages, Armenime for instance, were not down on the coast
Keep slapping it on,,,or move to Los Cris

To be honest I've never noticed a fly problem here, and mosquitos are everywhere anyway at certain times .... I don't think we get more than our fair share of them.
Flies seem to be periodic, and closely related to calimas and sciroccos ... perhaps they're blown in. Where I found flies to be a constant problem was in Amarilla Golf, where we rented for 6 weeks when we first came over. They were everywhere, and the other J had to stand with a fly swat waving them away while I would be preparing food. I've never had anything remotely like that in Callao Salvaje even at the height of a calima. Maybe it's the golf courses, or at least the watering of them ... this was the general wisdom, though to me that would more explain mosquitos than flies!
Hi everyone.Slightly off subject I suppose but re the flies I agree with Janet. I've been over three times since I got the keys for our static home on camping nauta last December and when it was very warm i noticed a few flies and they were duly swotted. When I got home after our Feb visit the Kleeneze catalogue came through the door. Now I don't usually buy anything from these catalogues but I saw something I haven't seen for years 'Fly Papers'. So I bought some and brought them out at easter and strategically placed them around the lounge. They worked a treat just like I remembered when I was a kid. However I'm not sure of the hygiene issue having dead flies hanging about especially on the one above the table. My wife wasn't impressed. What I did find though was after a few flies the fly problem seemed to disappear. Maybe the site of their mates hanging on the papers discouraged them from coming in. God I sound so sad relating this, but there you are. Hope you are all surviving the heat ok.

Actually that's interesting ... maybe they didn't stop coming because they saw their mates, but because the prevailing weather conditions had changed .... which reinforces what I'd heard! Thankyou!
To get us back on topic, it's a lot clearer today, and the Scirocco seems to be passing ... at least the dust part is. The temperature is still way up in the late 20s/early 30s. The coolest it got yesterday was 22 degrees at 2am this morning!
On one of the Homes Abroad, Living in Spain, etc, programmes they went into a Spanish house and something unusual was hanging from the ceiling to keep flies away.... and I'm buggered if I can remember what it was!

Anyone know what the Spanish use?
(Comical suggestions are more than welcome)
Dead people? Flies like dead people!
And to keep on topic, as long as it stays warm for when we get there on Tuesday then I'm happy!

I have seen it just like that in Callao Janet (the locals call them Lava flies), every shop had sold out of fly spray

The Spanish don't use anything, they are able to talk to the Spanish flies in Spanish and just cut a deal, they wont spray them if they leave them alone and go and annoy and bite the English.
