How many football teams are there in Tenerife? I heard that there's one for the North and one for the South. Is this correct?

There are loads all over the island, but they play in different divisions.

CD Tenerife are in Segunda A - the league below the Primera (UK Equivalent to the Championship) - They are the Island's main (and highest positioned) team.

The other notable team at the moment is San Isidro. They are located in... wait for it... San Isidro! Which is near the airport. They are in Segunda B which is equivalent to the UK division 1 (as it is now!)

There are teams all over the place, but they tend to be in the minor leagues. There are also English teams such as Tenerife Sur, Tenerife Sur B and Grandee O'Donnell's that play in the south. If you go to the football to see punch ups on the pitch, go to one of their matches... as the Refs are really biased towards the Spanish teams and 'disagreements' often happen!

I have heard of incidents at some minor league matches where the opposing Manager has had a whistle and blown it as his team are attacking so that the defenders stop in their tracks... plus one ref got a good kicking at a recent match resulting in a 5 year ban for a player!

I've also heard of a team that had 12 players on the pitch!

I used to referee in UK Non League (AKA broken glass and dog sh1t league).

I once was reffing when one of the teams manager's shouted to one of his players... "Don't F&%K!&g pass to him, he's a F&%K!&g paedophile!

I thought about sending the manager off but as there was no stand to send him to i decided to pretend I didn't hear it. Pity as all the other players seemed to think it was very funny.

OK Kirsty, you've made me mind up.... I lived my life in Newcastle ands supported the underdog; Sundlerland. Guess which professional Tenerife team I'm choosing to support?

What colours do San Isidro play in and what size is their ground and whats their average attendance?

They play in red & white their average attendance is about 300. The ground has a bar though, so that's quite handy!

CD Tenerife are the underdogs too though... as we are always the victims of unscrupilous refs. Being an Island team, they tend to favour the mainland teams when we play 'em 'cos the mainland teams don't like to travel here!

Reffing in spain is atrocious! It is a regular occurance to have 5 mins mysteriously added to extra time because we are in the lead...

Armada Sur often go and give our support to San Isidro as long as it doesn't clash with CDT.

I suppose San Isidro is an easier option to some people because it's in the South... mind you, you have to drive there yourself, so you have to watch how many bevvies you have, plus the gate's 10€ - so it's not really any cheaper.

Sorry, I meant in local rivalry terms...

    Man U Man C
    Stoke C Port Vale
    Liverpool Everton
    Newcastle Sunderland

    etc..

300 is a bit crap. I take it their ground is crap too? Do they have any seats?

Well, there's not really any local rivalry between CDT and other Tenerife sides... most Canarians support CDT and their local team side-by-side. The rivalry is between CDT & Las Palmas (Gran Canaria). When San Isidro played Las Palmas last week, 200 CDT hardcore fans turned up to back San Isidro and shout '¡Hijos de putas!' at the Las Palmas away supporters...!

The ground is pretty crap... not so much seats, as concrete steps. There is a bar though - or did I already mention that?

Kirsty is spot on with most of the things she said. Only San isidro play in yellow & red not white and red. Their crowds have picked up to 500 or so but they have over 1,000 season ticket holders but during the summer despite gaining promotion they sacked their manager and 14 players and the local San isidro fans revolted and stay away(infact other local team Granadilla now enjoy more support even though they are in a lower division)
Don´t think kirsty has been this season, but there are now seats the whole way around the ground.

The rivalry between CD Tenerife & Las Palmas goes back many years, back in 1989 CD Tenerife in the promotion area of the 2nd div. needed Las Palmas to do them a favour and beat Rayo Vallecano at home and they lost 1-6! No bull****.

In the last few years the matches have been marked by violence mostly between the Clubs "Ultra" fans. For Tenerife the Frente Blanquiazul http://www.frenteblanquiazul.net who are more radikal anti-Spain fans and their rivals from Las Palmas the Ultra-naciente http://www.ultranaciente.com who supposed to be apolitical but lean towards the right.

These are the Ultra Naciente fans in the match at San Isidro a few weeks back. The banner is an insult to Tenerife, changing our flag into a Las palmas colured flag. During the morning when the Las Palmas fans arrived at SAnta Cruz coming off the Fred Olsen ferry they were "met" by a mob of roughly 40 Tenerife lads.
