THE devastated family of a teenager who plunged to his death from a hotel balcony while on a sunshine holiday in Spain last night told how the tragedy has left them heartbroken.
Fitness fanatic Allan Milligan, 19, was in Tenerife with seven friends when their dream trip turned into a nightmare.
Allan is believed to have been leaning over the balcony of his fourth-floor hotel room to chat to a woman in the apartment below when he lost his balance and fell 50 feet to his death.
The teenager had been due to return home the next day but, instead, his friends had to fly back to Scotland without him.
Tragically, Allan’s mum Elaine had tried to phone him just days earlier to tell him that she had set a date for her forthcoming wedding – but the call never got through.
Last night, Elaine told the Paisley Daily Express: “Allan was a brilliant boy. I can’t believe this has happened to him the day before he was due to come home.”
PROUD bride-to-be Elaine Milligan rang her son Allan in Spain to tell him she had set a date for her wedding – and that she wanted him to give her away.
But the call asking her beloved son to do the honours never got through to him in Tenerife.
And, tragically, Johnstone teenager Allan died just a few days later when he accidentally fell from his hotel balcony.
When Elaine dropped 19-year-old Allan and two of his friends off at Prestwick Airport to jet out to the sun-kissed Spanish holiday island earlier this month, she never dreamed it would be the last time she would see him.
Now she has been left heartbroken by his sudden death.
Last night, tearful Elaine told the Paisley Daily Express: “I tried to phone Allan on Sunday to tell him that my fiance Freddie Murphy and I had set a date for our wedding in October and I wanted him to give me away but I couldn’t get through.
“I had taken Allan and two of his pals to the airport a few days earlier and had told him: ‘Have a good time, be good and behave yourself.’
Heartbroken
“That was the last time I saw him. I’m heartbroken.”
Fitness fanatic Allan, of Corseford, Johnstone, had jetted out to Tenerife with seven friends but their dream holiday turned into a nightmare at around 6am on Thursday.
It is believed Allan was leaning over the balcony of his fourth-floor hotel room to chat to a woman in the apartment below when he lost his balance and fell 50 feet to his death.
The sickening tragedy happened at the three-star Apartamentos Caribe Hotel in the resort of Playa de Las Americas, which is popular with thousands of sun-seeking Scots every year.
Trainee tiler Allan had been due to return home yesterday but, instead, his friends had to fly back to Scotland without him.
His pals are believed to have been quizzed by Spanish police before being allowed to fly home but Allan’s family have said foul play has been ruled out.
Elaine has told how her world – and those of her daughter Amanda, 20, and son Dean, 16 – were changed forever when the mum of one of Allan’s holiday pals banged on her door in the early hours of the morning.
She was there to break the news to Allan’s family that he had been in an horrific accident.
Elaine – who now faces a torturous wait of up to 10 days before her son’s remains are brought back home so he can be laid to rest – said: “Apparently, Allan was talking to one of the girls in his group who was in the room below when the accident happened.
“He was talking down to her from his balcony and then fell over. He just lost his balance and slipped over.
“Allan was quite charming and he just loved his mum to bits.”
Holiday
Amanda added: “Allan was on holiday with four boys and three girls and they were all pals from school.
“They went to the same place on holiday last year.
“The first thing we knew about the accident was about 6.30am yesterday when one of the other boys’ mums banged on the door.
“She said she knew there had been an accident and we should phone one of the lads out there. I did that and they told me it was true – that it was Allan.
“I couldn’t get information from the Spanish police or the police here but, finally, I managed to speak to the British Embassy out there. They told me later that foul play has been ruled out.”
Former Johnstone High School pupil Allan, who enjoyed playing poker, has been remembered by friends on his Bebo website.
And 300 online pals paid their respects to him with a ‘fly by’ on internet game Dark Orbit.
Allan was known as a hard worker and, earlier this week, he had featured in the Express after enjoying success in the regional heat of this year’s SkillBuild event – the UK’s biggest construction skills competition.
SkillBuild, which is organised by ConstructionSkills, the Sector Skills Council for the construction industry, finds the UK’s best apprentice across a variety of trades, including bricklaying, carpentry, joinery and painting and decorating.
Allan, who worked for Thomson Tiling, picked up the bronze award at the Scottish heat.
Proud mum Elaine said: “Allan worked seven days a week and was a hard grafter. He was at the gym every night and loved football.
“He was a mad Rangers fan and he always had Ferguson printed on his jersey after the team’s captain Barry Ferguson. People called him ‘Wee Barry’.
“Allan had a paper round when he was 15 and he kicked his ball all the way round. He was known as the paperboy with the ball.
Thanks
“We would like to thank everybody for their kind comments about Allan.”
Clutching Allan’s Skillbuild medal and a copy of his award presentation photograph, Amanda and Dean said he will never be forgotten.
They added: “Allan was quite charming and would do anything for anyone. He was a fitness fanatic and loved going to the gym and playing football.
“We just can’t believe this has happened. It hasn’t sunk in yet and we will miss him so much.”
