A wheelchair-bound grandmother was killed in a road accident in Tenerife
The grieving family of a wheelchair-bound grandmother killed in a road accident were last night making preparations to have her body returned home.
A family holiday to Tenerife in the Canary Islands turned to tragedy when the widowed pensioner was killed after her wheelchair was hit by what has been described as a “speeding” car.
Mother-of-five Molly Grimley (78), from Portadown Road, Armagh, was with her two daughters when she was knocked down at a pedestrian crossing. She had just left a restaurant in the busy resort of Las Americas — a top destination for thousands of Northern Ireland tourists.
It is understood the driver of the car was later detained by police, breath-tested and may face charges. It is also believed that Spanish police have confirmed the driver of the car was over the legal alcohol limit and has a criminal record.
Mrs Grimley was thrown from her wheelchair, but despite desperate efforts to save her, she died later in hospital.
A post-mortem examination was carried out and arrangements are being made to fly her body home.
It is thought it will take up to one week before authorities in Tenerife release her body so it can be returned home for her funeral. Arrangements for her burial are expected to be finalised and released later.
Friends and neighbours in Linsey’s Heights, where she lived, said they were stunned by the tragedy on Monday night.
SDLP councillor Mealla Bratton said: “The community is in state of shock. My sympathy goes out to this lady’s family.”

what a shame poor lady, hope they lock that person up and throw away the key.
Speaking as someone who has lost 2 family members to a drunk driver, I hope the authorities are a hell of a lot harsher on him than they would be in the UK.

How sad. My sympathies go out to the family... And I agree that I hope the driver pays the price. I know that sometimes accidents are genuine, and the persons guilt afterwards is their own personal prison sentence, but somebody over the alcohol limit with a criminal record may be displaying a blatant disregard for others even prior to his incident. Death penalty isn't good enough for some... Dave.

Sad about this but heres what happened to us last night.WE were at aroundabout junction , stopped and the vehicle in front rolled back( we were about 1 .5 meters away) and hit us seemingly oblivious to this .My husband got out to speak with the driver who was talking on the phone. He did not know that he had done any wrong.i got out managed to speak tohim( he was quite obviously drunk9 and he indicated he woul pull over .Hubby was taking a foto at the time.Said driver then proceeded to drive off and deliberatly hit hubby, we assume to try and damage phone so no evidence. we persued and he enetered a private garage and some minutes later emerged staggering whiilst we were on phone to police.he enetered bar next to us and when the police turned up he was not there! Although we had not seen him leave we assume the occupants distracted us by talking about damage to car .
End of this , he was not found last night by police but we have done the neceassary today and have to wait and see what will happen.Hubbys okay no broken bones but internal swellimng and brusing according to hospital report.
why did he do this.Had he stopped and give Insurance details we would never have invloved police.Hopefully he will now get his come uppance.

Sorry to hear this also , hope hubby recovers as fast as possible. And the driver involved gets the punishment he deserves.
