Tenerife goat farmers blockaded cheese factory in Arico yesterday in protest.
One of the biggest cheese factories in the Canaries was blockaded yesterday by Tenerife goat farmers protesting at not being paid for deliveries of milk.
Twenty farmers took up position early morning outside the gates of the factory in Arico to prevent it from operating normally. The farmers say they have not been paid for goat's milk delivered over the past eight months and the arrears are already in excess of one million euros. The island's Department of Agriculture has offered to mediate in the conflict, which will escalate in the coming days unless the factory pays at least one month's bills immediately.
Arico goat's cheese is one of the most popular products among locals and tourists at farmers' markets throughout the island.
