It is interesting that a Brit has successfully sued for compensation following his experience of being placed in a hotel, in the EU, with the majority of guests being German. Amongst his claims, he cites that the information in the hotel was in the German language. The Court agreed. Has the British Legal System finally gone mad?
The German newspaper, 'Bild' has picked up on the case and recommends that several destinations should be avoided - including Playa de las Americas! The rationale is that there are too many English staying there.
Does anybody have any view on this? Or am I being a little over sensitive?

I can understand there being a problem if you are sent on holiday to a hotel where the british are not catered for, by not being given information or entertainment in English. This would not be a problem for everyone though. I would quite relish the challenge of trying to communicate in a foreign language. In fact I remember a few years ago having a holiday in majorca where the majority of the people in our complex were Germans and this in no way spoiled the holiday.
I think the problem nowadays is that there are too many people who expect to find a problem on holiday and make a claim against the holiday company to reclaim the price of their holiday. This in effect gives them a free holiday the following year. Or am I being too pessimistic?

I remember an article about a client, Brenda,
claiming about a loud noise coming from outside the hotel. The disturbing "loud noise" was caused by breakers of sea.
They clearly wanted to lessen the price. On the other hand, few people would pay more if satisfied with a service.
when I went to Niagara and stayed in the embassy suites overlooking the falls, I phoned reception to ask if they could turn off the falls as the noise was keeping me awake

I find it hard to believe that this man won his case. I mean what would have happened if he came to Tenerife and stayed in a hotel that was full of Spanish holiday makers from the peninsular? If you want English stay in England. And coupled with that I have found that a large proportion of Germans speak more English that most English speak German. I don't think communication would have been a problem just another one on the 'make'
On a slightly different track, our complex is almost totally Austrian. All notices are in German, meetings held in german, workers brought from Austria to do work .Now we are in Spain this MUST BE SPANISH.We compalined and complained to try and get things legal and we now at least, sometimes get notices in Spanish although it is rare.
Friends of mine say its "tacky" in Las Americas and wont go nearer than Fanabe. For me a holiday is what you make of it and I would not dream of eating in a Macdonalds nor eating a roast or a cream tea when I am not in England. Surely the point in leaving the country is to find out about other places in the world, their culture, eating local food and getting to know local people and at least attempting to speak their language - I am always embarrassed at the way so many English people have no desire to do so and at the same time astounded by the amount of English spoken by non English native speakers who do. As to Las Americas, maybe a little of it is somewhat tacky but there are just as many tacky places here in England as there are no doubt elsewhere in the world - its not a good enough reason to avoid it or even to just rely on somebody elses opinion in doing so. Let common sense prevail
