In a serious but stable condition: one of the main trainers of the Loro Park whales.

One of the most experienced of the Orca trainers in Loro Park is currently in hospital having been crashed into by one of the approx 4 ton creatures during a routine play session. The trainer concerned is probably the most well-known, since she is the one who has featured in most of the Park's publicity.

Her upper-body injuries are not said to be life-threatening, but are clearly serious, and it seems there will be some reduction in the number of Orco shows offered daily by Loro Park over the next few weeks or so.

Full story, with picture of the trainer as seen in Loro Park publicity HERE

An update, with reports from both Hospital and Loro Park sources ... slight discrepancy, but this could just be that they have different concerns in what to stress.

The important thing is that she is improving.
Quote:

The condition of the Orca Ocean trainer injured yesterday at Loro Park is improving, after an operation at the University Hospital of the Canaries. Hospital sources say that the trainer, who was involved in routine play training, was bitten on the arm and dragged to the bottom of the pool, at which point she was able to release herself and rise to the surface. The whale was isolated from the others and transferred to another pool.

Loro Park itself says that the accident took place in one of the pools in the whale enclosure and occurred when, unluckily, the only whale with which she was practising in the tank pushed the trainer with an unfortunate motion, striking her in the chest. Her chest injuries and broken arm occurred at that point.

The trainer was immediately helped by her colleagues and the technical team which was also taking part in the session. Specialists from the Canarian Emergency Service also attended the scene, and then transferred her to Hospital.

As far as Canarias24Horas has been able to ascertain, it happens that the whale shows have recently been reduced in length because some of the animals are in season, which could be a factor in their behaviour.

Welcome!

She's conscious today, and talking to family, friends and colleagues. Clear improvement, though the fact that it's taken a couple of days to get to this stage shows how serious it all was.
