Three people are recovering in Puerto de la Cruz (Tenerife) after a near tragedy at a local beach. The town's fire brigade, backed by a helicopter, had to intervene to rescue the trio, who were close to drowning late yesterday evening.

According to police, two of the swimmers tried to help a third person who was spotted in difficulty off the coast at Playa Jardín, which is notorious for its strong currents. All three had problems returning to the shore and were near exhaustion by the time firemen reached them in a dinghy. One of the three was taken to hospital due to his condition.
