Reviewed 20th January 2007 Camello Center
TF 82, El Tanque
Tel: 922 136 191 / 136 399
This is a small locally-run attaction well off the beaten track, but in its own way; unique.
To get there: Bookable via the usual outlets via excursion bus or, by car: At the end of the TF1 (Adeje end) follow the TF82 towards Icod. The Camello Center is on the left-hand side, just before the town of El Tanque. The trip from the south takes about an hour and a half via a twisty and scenic route.
Camel ride fee: €8 per adult (less for children) Optional photo €6
Onsite food available - in fact they make a point of serving a Canarian menu. Onsite clean toilets. Prices: a coffee and a glass of wine together cost me €2.35
Best time to go: before the afternoon, when the coaches arrive.
The ride itself is for about 20 minutes (more would have made me worry about the camels) around a landscaped track. Each camel has two seats in a frame like a shaped see-saw across it's back, and you are strapped in, so it feels safe - even for small children.
The camels are roped together in a caravan, and the lead camel is lead by rope, at a walking pace.
I saw the venue in 2005, and it hasn't changed much, though they were using the low season to do some improvements to the shop this time.
It's got a positive feel to it, and children will love the camels. There are a lot of camels, perhaps 20-30 so I did not resent the €8 fee, as the owner seems to take care of them well. I'm no camel expert, but they all seemed contented, anyway.
If you have a car, you could take in the Camello Center after Masca (on the way) and perhaps continue on to Gaurachico or Icod for a full day of it. The Teno is a beautiful part of the Island for both visitors and residents to see.
