Los Palos Golf Course, Tenerife

What better place to learn, practice or play golf than in the Tenerife sunshine?

Los Palos is aimed at the amateur and occasional golfer.

Dress code: Shorts and sandals are OK, but you must wear a tee-shirt or golfing shirt (i.e. not a vest)

How to get there: Take the TF1 exit to Guaza (south) and just follow the road towards the sea, through Guaza town. Los Palos is about a mile out of town, on the right, immediately after a covered banana plantation. It is signposted. If you go past by mistake, just loop back at the roundabout a mile further along.

Facilities: Driving range; €1 for a basket of 20 balls. Free pitching green and putting green (provide your own ball(s)). 9-hole all par-3 course, with water hazards amongst palm trees and gardens etc. Currently €18 (€15 residents). Clubhouse serves beer etc. on a terrace, and has a menu del dia of stuff like 'meat & potatos' or today; 'lentil soup' - all home cooked. There is also a general menu of the usual cafe fare. Prices are cheap, and English is spoken & understood if needed.

You can hire clubs and/or trolly onsite (I don't know the current prices)

The best time to go is mid-mornings on a weekday. At weekends, there are quite a few children out with their parents on the practice range/putting green, which could be a bit annoying.

Los Palos is owned and managed by 2 Canarian brothers, and popular with locals and knowledgeable holidaymakers alike. To me, it has a great relaxed atmosphere, and for a beginner golfer like myself, there is no 'golf pretensiousness' that puts you off having a go.

Jimmy is the resident instructor, and charges €40 for an hour's instruction. I had a couple of lessons with him as a beginner, and it was money well spent. He's a great laugh, and puts you at ease.

So if you play golf a little, and fancy a couple of hours playing the Los Palos course, or venting holiday frustrations whacking balls at the driving range for a couple of euro; give it a try!

And there's always that Dorada waiting at the 10th hole..

That's a little mean-spirited @cinnamon. Many people come to Tenerife specifically to golf in the winter months. To them, an independent golf course review is useful - and a nice mornings 'excursion'

Plenty of reviews of 'English bars' here - each to their own...

I have to start off by saying that I don't play golf. My Dad would actually say that I coudn't hit a Bull's **** with a shovel . I have played golf though a few times with my Dad on holiday.

As a complete novice this a great little course to play on. I actually enjoyed it and would definitely go and try it again. If I remember correctly I was 10 over par which I was actually delighted with.

i fully agree, torrenter, there´s nothing wrong with that at all for those who can appreciate it...i personally don´t play golf myself, i don´t get a thrill out of hunting down an innocent little white ball across the greens, and i do prefer my "tees" with buiscuits ...i worked at the GDS myself, so i know how many actually came down early in the morning hours just to get away from their daily routines and stress....hence the statement that for a lot of people who like that sports it can be a nice day out
