What better place to learn, practice or play golf than in the Tenerife sunshine?
Los Palos is aimed at the amateur and occasional golfer.
Dress code: Shorts and sandals are OK, but you must wear a tee-shirt or golfing shirt (i.e. not a vest)
How to get there: Take the TF1 exit to Guaza (south) and just follow the road towards the sea, through Guaza town. Los Palos is about a mile out of town, on the right, immediately after a covered banana plantation. It is signposted. If you go past by mistake, just loop back at the roundabout a mile further along.
Facilities: Driving range; €1 for a basket of 20 balls. Free pitching green and putting green (provide your own ball(s)). 9-hole all par-3 course, with water hazards amongst palm trees and gardens etc. Currently €18 (€15 residents). Clubhouse serves beer etc. on a terrace, and has a menu del dia of stuff like 'meat & potatos' or today; 'lentil soup' - all home cooked. There is also a general menu of the usual cafe fare. Prices are cheap, and English is spoken & understood if needed.
You can hire clubs and/or trolly onsite (I don't know the current prices)
The best time to go is mid-mornings on a weekday. At weekends, there are quite a few children out with their parents on the practice range/putting green, which could be a bit annoying.
Los Palos is owned and managed by 2 Canarian brothers, and popular with locals and knowledgeable holidaymakers alike. To me, it has a great relaxed atmosphere, and for a beginner golfer like myself, there is no 'golf pretensiousness' that puts you off having a go.
Jimmy is the resident instructor, and charges €40 for an hour's instruction. I had a couple of lessons with him as a beginner, and it was money well spent. He's a great laugh, and puts you at ease.
So if you play golf a little, and fancy a couple of hours playing the Los Palos course, or venting holiday frustrations whacking balls at the driving range for a couple of euro; give it a try!
And there's always that Dorada waiting at the 10th hole..
