230 Dogs, almost 24,000 members, how hard can it be to rehome half of them???????

Very hard as the proof shows!

Don't let Eugenio get disheartened Suzy we all know what a fantastic job he is doing with limited resources and in the face of adversity!
I've never had a humble opinion. If you've got an opinion, why be humble about it?

Could we please have a reality check - where exactly do LA think 6,000 abandoned dogs per year can be housed and cared for ... just how much room do the refuges have on the island ... max 1,000, if that ... 100 dogs to Germany is a drop in the ocean ... what happens the other thousands each year

With those numbers, I think you have just made the case that euthanasia needs to be practiced - certainly until the economy picks us and less people are leaving the island .. and more people can be convinced to have their dogs neutered

Well, there are 18 refuges under FECACAP.

Besides, Madrid has set in motion a new law which will greatly increase animal protection in Spain, and bring the Canaries into line with the legislation in several other autonomous regions.

Animal Defence organization El Refugio has confirmed that the Government, in accordance with electoral promises, will shortly introduce fines of up to €15,025 in the Canaries for maltreatment of animals, bringing the region into line with Madrid, the Balearics, Extremadura, the Basque country, Galicia and La Rioja. Only Valencia, Cataluña and Aragón have larger fines, of up to €18,000, €20,000 and €150,000 respectively.

As part of the new measures, it is also expected that local authorities will be prohibited from putting down animals which have been abandoned, and the sale of animals in pet shops will be banned.

I already made a reference to this in a previous post ... the only region so far to prohibit the putting down of animals is Cataluyna and the relevant sections of that law, which I will search out to quote later, permit euthanasia on humane or sanitary grounds ... I am sure you will find that severe overcrowding falls under that heading.

There is no way that the Cabildo will enact legislation that makes their problem worse. Additional fines for cruelty are to be welcomed and lets hope there is more enforcement of the law they already have powers under.

When I guessed there might be 1,000 places in refuges, I should have added that said refuges are full to the gills - so where exactly are the additional 5,000 per annum to go

One more point is important: certain euthanasias are required by law. For example, we will not release aggressive animals.

Animal Protection Society of Durham Are You A No Kill Shelter?

I should have added more of that section ...

Euthanasia is unquestionably the hardest part of our job. We wish, more than anything else, that we could in good conscience become a no-kill shelter.

The math is unalterable: if we take in 6,758 stray or abandoned animals each year, and we’re able to find homes for only 1,484 of these animals, that means that 5,274 animals have nowhere to go. We believe that given the circumstances, a painless death is the best choice among a limited set of awful choices.

Re: Animal welfare in Tenerife discussion thread

i very rarely come on to the forum as i think half the people use it for advertising and the other half have no one else to argue with at home.please forgive me if i break any forum rules. howerver i think now we have to do something to help these animals.

i have had the pleasure to meet 10 forum members who without starting another arguement are unhappy with eugenio and live arico. live arico has huge problems as we all know.

there are many people working very hard and going without to help these dogs and cats. some very good people, dominique and regina {cats} found a way to get some of these dogs to be rehomed in germany and today it is still working very well. we do get a lot of help from live arico germany which we are very greatful to these people obviously. getting back to the 10 forum members we have spoken to, i feel you are very intelligent people some of you own nice fincas with plenty of space for dogs and cats. you seem to have funding behind you and i know for a fact what ever you write on here you are all animal lovers. i personally beleive this is the time to start your own foundation no matter how small to begin i beleive you would get the support of many people us at poochies being the first to offer our help. a few people have been trying to show the problems in live arico to draw awareness to others we personally have no problems with this but you must have a final plan showing people we have too many dogs and living in poor conditions is just going to turn people against live arico which will not solve the problem in any way its the dogs who will suffer in the end.
