i agree in most parts the tired areas cant really compete with el duke and fanabe, but the show must go on,and publicans busting a gut selling cheap beer and food need to change there ways and fast.if they form some sort of consortium they could all agree to scrap the euro pint and charge a realistic sum.food is a cheap commodity but bloody hell its a nitemare slaving over a hot stove in 80deg for a few measly quid.
i could imagine they are all losing the battle now working 18 hours a day trying to make ends meet.
try and get to gether and work as a team, anything is worth a go in these hard times.
hope i havnt offended anyone, but i have been in the same boat in the uk,and i walked away, its not quite that simple for you guys.
I agree with the maths Andy, i sell beer at normal prices (€2.50 to tourist. €2.00 to locals.) and i still get custom our prices have gone up with inflation. I can understand why the bars do sell drinks cheap during the day, if they didn't they would not get any customers, tourists always do cheap, especially daytime with beer and food. In my opinion they also like value for money, if they have a good time they don't mind paying an extra €1 a pint.

Nope sorry not harsh at all, you walk round Puerto Colon and see for yourself, starting at Scotch Corner and Matlocks, 2 English brekkies for 5, then head down the port, its the same down there.
Almost every bar is doing large beers for 1 during the day, cheap as chip meals, i could name a bar that was doing Steak Pie,Mash, Peas and Gravy for 2 then a pint for another 1. Taffs corner was doing large DORADA for 5-c until 6, wonder why he isn't there any more??????????????
Imagine 4 blokes eating and getting a beer for 3, not much over ฃ2.50, then the bars complain they aren't making any money.
I know from first hand experience the problems with Puerto Colon, it is a tired complex, it needs money spending on it, lets face it with Fanabe and Del Duque as its closest neighbours would you rather tread the spotless paths and the golden sand or would you rather fall down the grubby, broken tiled stairs?
Lets face it what does cheap brekkies and 1 pints attract?
If they all worked together and charged the same prices, for example at least 2 for a large beer then people wouid pay it as they wouldn't know any different and maybe the area could start to regenerate or else it will end up the same way as Silencio has gone.
And before anyone starts i love Silencio, its a great place and i have fond memories of holidays there and still enjoy playing darts in the League over there but does it still have tourist population????????????
Just noticed the above in the original post, i rest my case!
Average rent on the port about 1500 - 2000 euros.
Beer is about 90 a barrel, 88 pints in a barrel, sell about 82 pints after spillages and pulling the new barrel off etc.
So one barrel makes brings in 82 euros, bought for 90, thats a loss of 8 in my book ok maybe one in three free so for every four barrels sold maybe 80 made.
Do the sums and then hopefully you will see where i am coming from with this topic, cheap isn't always good, especially if it will see you out of business eventually!
Well Andy these "tactics" are obviously working for some bars. If you drive round past Scotch Corner you will see we are always busy! I find what most of the tourists want in our area is somewhere "cheap and cheerful" and we are happy to oblige! It may not be everyones cup of tea (back to the "snob" thread!!) but we give the holidaymakers what they want and they keep coming back, which makes me a happy bunny and gives my bank manager a wee bit less stress!!

How about you give out the name of your establishment, and publish the two tier price. Then a lot of us can go where we,ll be more welcome. I don't think you'll last long in business relying on local customers

sorry Davan..not a tourist rip-off. The reason we sell beer a liitle cheaper per pint to our locals is because they use the bar everyday. We all work hard for our wages over here and it's nice to get a bit of discount in a regular watering-hole. This bar has been in business for many years, 14yrs with the same owner. 12yrs with the same bar staff. No sign of going under at the moment and we are still cheaper than most bars in town for tourists. We also have a lot of repeat customers coming back each year and use our discretion regarding price. Please feel free to call in (pm me for name as we don't advertise) and we can have a chat about it eh!!!!

I am a tourist and I have been drinking on Puerto Colon for many years, in fact even prior to the Slow Boat opening it's doors.
I always try out new bars and take advantage of their cheap offers however I always seem to gravitate towards one particular bar - It is definitely not the cheapest but the bar staff are efficient and welcoming. Last Tuesday evening was a particularly interesting evening of entertainment.
