I am pretty sure that your EU medical card will only cover you for emergency treatment within the "Social" ie State system and not cover you in the private clinics.
Generally speaking, with Holiday Insurance you can go to a private clinic, but have to pay first and claim back the costs through the insurance company later. Hope that helps

Hi, I hope this link will be helpful - it shows you what you should expect to find covered by your card. Anyone in your party who takes any medicines on a regular basis should ask their GP for a small extra supply just in case you find yourselves in Tenerife longer than expected (e.g. if there's another ash cloud). This will save you worrying about getting a prescription whilst you're here, just in case there's a delay in your return flight. You won't be able to use the EHIC with any private doctors any more than you could go and see a private consultant in the UK and expect it to be covered by the NHS. The Spanish NHS runs on the same basis as the UK, consult the GP and get referred - unless it's an emergency.

Hope you all have a lovely holiday and everyone is in good health and with lots of energy to go out and enjoy it!

Ass has been said the card will only cover for emergencies at El Majon and Canadelaria , occasionally at Hospiten Sur, but they will always want Insurance first and foremost.
Most private medical centres accept Travel insurance but it might be an idea due to the nature of your enquiry to check first.
The most poplualr and most used ( not necessarily the best in everything are Hospiten Sur in Las Americas tel 922750022, Costa Adeje in San Eugenio ( now part of the USP group) tel 922 792400 amd Dr Spedificao in Los Cristianos near Hipertrebol.tel 922790563.
I know Hospiten and Costa Adeje have web sites so have a look on there.
    Enjoy your holiday

    Wow! Great!
Thanks everyone for all this invaluable information.
This is now one less thing to think about.
More positive stuff now! Like losing a bit of weight. I was so skinny when I lived there 28/ 32" waist - I don't even want to type the figure that my waistline has reached now but it is 20+ years ago, I suppose
