Bar 39, Los Cristianos, Tenerife

Now I have raved in the past about the service and entertainment in this bar but in the spirit of unbiased reporting feel it necessary to report poor service.
I was out in June and noted the food and drinks had gone right downhill!
The entertainment was excellent.

I have just been out for two weeks in August again. The food was awful and the beer was total (you know what). It wasn't just me my step father came out for the second week and after a couple of pints started drinking bottles which is unheard of for him.
I had a couple of Carling Extra cold but as the evening went on it began to taste like whisky and I hate whisky.

What is wrong with the bar staff one in particular is it so hard to smile everything seemed a chore and some clearly did not want to be there.
They also charged my daughter 12 eruros for 3 small lemonades which was poured direct from sprite bottles which cost 99 cents in Spar.

When I asked for the bill at the end of our meal they showed but did not give. I thought that was dodgy so insisted (i am normally a very quiet customer) on seeing the bill there was no mention of any soft drinks being bought all drinks were shown as 4 euros for beer including my son who is also not old enough to drink.

If it wasn't for Thor the PR I doubt so many people would be in. Which was proved when he had the night off in the middle of the holiday season and it was dead (fair enough it was a Sunday and the festival was also on).
However in the spirit of balanced reporting the entertaintainment continues to be excellent and my mother and step father were in stitches at the antics of Kracka (thanks guys you are great) and Ged and Neil Diamond, Cy Benson and Paul Mack (Robbie Williams).
I still go in there for the entertainment but do not eat there or wear my rose tinted specatacles.

i was in bar 39 for the first time two weeks ago ended going to the bar to get our own drinks couldnt wait any longer and as said in the other post they were exspensive the entertainment was ok not too bad i suppose your paying a premium for the entertainment and not the 1.50-2euros in the bars in the funcal any way its your choice where you go. d

i have to say the best thing about this bar is kracka!! sorry havent tried the food but when we out in august our friend s tried the sunday dinner and breakfast and they said it was ok..i agree with you over the drinks prices too very pricey compared to some bars,but saying that we didnt notice any peculiar taste in our drinks!! the cocktails are very good-would be a good idea to do happy hour and also special offer on cocktails too,i know bars that make a small fortune who serve two for one on cocktails all day and night(6 euros for two)! so it can be done! the bar staff have always been lovely,,tiger tony is an old favourite who manages the bar and laura who is a waitress is nice too,also the other young man behind the bar(sorry dont know your name) he is lovely too,all polite as well.

I have to agree with Sharpy. We went to Bar 39 in May and the food was fine, but when we visited again last week it was a different story.
Vinnie and I both ordered the "Hunter's Chicken" which was served with salad and chips at €7.50 each. We should have heard alarm bells when we were given steak knives, but when the meals arrived it was not good. There was a surprisingly large amount of chicken covered in sauce, but I think maybe they needed to get rid of some left over meat. I struggled to cut my chicken - it was so tough and chewing it sufficiently to be able to swallow it was virtually impossible. Vinnie was able to eat his eventually, but I couldn't cope with the mouthfuls of "string". The waitress asked if everything was OK when she took our plates, and when I explained the chicken was inedible she immediately said she would deduct money from our bill (as though it was a stock reply used all the time).
They "generously" deducted €3.00 from our bill, which meant I had just paid €4.50 for salad and chips, but obviously they didn't value the chicken very highly either!
Needless to say we won't be eating there again, though we would go for drinks and entertainment. If anybody has a tender, tasty "Hunter's Chicken" let me know!!!

I agree with Sharpy as well. We´ve been to Tenerife a few weeks ago and went also to Bar 39. But only once. The PR got us in and was the only member of staff with a smile. We can´t say that the drink prices or the food was bad, because we went during the day and there was no problem with that at all.

What was wrong was the service. The barmaid was very unfriendly and didn´t manage to smile once (within half an hour). It was about two o´clock when we went there and it was 12 of us. It was not to busy and now we understand why. Everything we asked seemed to be to much to do for the barmaid. We felt as if we had to say sorry for ordering an other drink or even to order our food. About half an hour later an other barmaid was on duty and we thought, it can only get better, but it didn´t. It got worse. You could hear her complaining that she had just started and that there was a lot of work to do. Meaning us sitting there and having lunch. How nice is that...

We have also been told that the entertainment is supposed to be very good but after that experience we won´t even bother to go back unless the attitude of the daytime staff improves a lot.

P.S.: Dear owner of Bar 39. You have a very nice bar and we would like to give it a try again. Please tell you bar staff that it is not a crime to smile during working hours and that a friendly word can make a huge difference between a nice looking bar and a great place to be. Thank you.

id just like to say that all you people must have been going to a differnt bar 39 i go to.i live in the el mirador complex and personally think bar 39 is the best place round there. food great,for pub food.if you want something amazing then go to a restaurant and pay restaurant prices. all the staf are friendly,but we all have times when we are tired, even if they work in a bar and are expected by customers,especially holiday makers to have as good a time as them.entertainment is expensive for the bar,and dont forget,you dont get charged to get in,so yes the drinks are more expensive then round by yellas,but the bar has to pay for the entertainment some how.

I have to agree with most of the posters and say that the food is lousy.We were over in June and i can honestly say that i wont eat in there again.We also own on Mirador and frequent all the amenities around.Iagree the entertainment is 1st class and do not mind paying for that,but until the food rises to the standard of El Brasero round the corner and other nearby eating establishments then i will certainly not eat there.Thor is a breath of fresh air to the place but the cuisine need to be looked at IMHO.

We've been in Bar39 quite a few times but have never eaten there so cannot give an opinion on the food. Yes the drinks are expensive (we usually go in before the entertainment starts), but you cannot compere the food with El Brasero.

Bar39 is a pub which does food, El Brasero is a restaurant which specialises in good food (and boy it is good ) & you will pay a lot more for it (worth every penny imo).
As robbo says if you go to a restaurant you pay restaurant prices.

El Brasero prices are not much dearer than Bar 39 and that is a factor to contend with.Bar 39 is an expensive PUB with not so good food.

Have you tried the Hunter's Chicken? - uncuttable, unchewable, inedible!!!

We would only go there now for the entertainment, to eat in this area it has to be Golden Resources or the Oyster Catcher.
