Will an English TV, work in Tenerife.

Hi ,
Could anyone please tell me if we bought a telly over from the uk would it work in Tenerife. They are so much cheaper over here and we can get a 19in flat screen in our hand luggage, but we were told it might not work.
Thank You
Marie.

Watching TV in Spain

What about my UK TV?

If you are thinking of taking your TV with you to Spain, TV sets operating on the British system (PAL-1) won’t work. Spain uses the PAL- BG standard. However, it will work via a satellite system or by connecting the aerial to a Spanish video player, which must be connected by a SCART lead to the TV. Most expats who move to Spain, with all the best intentions of learning Spanish via the television usually end up with a whacking great dish taking up half of their terrace.

i found this still cant edit my posts david

Will my British TV work in Spain? would be what 99% of the population would say.

What is this SECAM thingy? Few words will do...not too technical...I can just about put a plug on.
Yes you British TV will work in Spain provided it has a SCART socket. One trick with the plug is to take a British mains adapter with 4 sockets on it and the change the plug to a Spanish one. That way you only have to change one instead of four plugs.

You might have problems with the sound on Spanish analogue TV. If your TV supports different PAL settings try changing them until the sound comes on. I wouldn’t worry about it too much as the analogue service in Spain will be switched of in the next two years.

Buy yourself a TDT box in Spain, they are not very expensive and they come with a button on the remote that switches language. This will allow you to watch American films and TV series in English.

SECAM is an obsolete French analogue TV standard so forget about that.

if only i could put these in one post

We took 4 English T.V.'s to Tenerife, plugged them in, set them to auto scan and they all tuned into the Spanish channels in seconds.

The new digital T.V.'s, (Freeview) don't work though neither do English digi boxes but the Spanish ones are compatable with English T.V.'s.

Also, quite a few people bring their Sky boxes because, as they have been tuned in in the U.K., all but BBC and ITV channels work. You just need to continue with your subscription in the U.K. and buy yourself a decent dish of course! I believe the meter diameter one is big enough. It costs about 90€ on top of the price of the dish to get it installed.
