Question What are the school rules regarding mobile phones in Tenerife?

Hi,

My friends child recently got their mobile phone confiscated at school (Spanish). The head teacher was searching his bag (for a completely different reason) and found the phone turned off inside the bag. My friend will have to go to the school in person to collect the phone, however he works most day so may not get the chance.

School rules state that any phones must be kept in bags turned off (as was his).

My question is; can the school keep the phone until his dad can go to collect it?

I know in England that a phone cannot be kept for a period of time because, although not theft, the law states that you can not take someone else's belongings without consent.

Any comments would be great....

Thanks, SCFS

I spoke to my colleague at work today and she said that although they have to have mobiles switched off and in their bag, theoratically they are not actually supposed to have them, so as long as a teacher doesn't see it, they allow it. In this case the teacher saw it, even though they were looking in the bag for something else. I suggest your mate calls the school and asks to speak to the 'Maestro del Inglés' if he finds it difficult to go in and see them, as he or she will be able to speak English. Try and call between 11.15 and 11.45 as this is usually break time and all the teachers will be drinking coffee in the staff room, so therefore available

Incidentally, I noticed you put IES Los Cristianos II. This is a secondary school, is in not? My colleage said the same thing happened to her daughter at secondary school... and she is a teacher!

Hope that helps.
