What are the Barrancos for?

What are the Barranco's for?
I saw them in Gran Canaria, and in Tenerife.
I have been told different things; they are for lava flow in case of an eruption, they used to be open sewers, they used to be the supply of fresh water from the underground lakes, they are for flood water from Teide's ice.
Can anybody help?
Cheers.
Dave.

A barranco is a "ravine" ... nothing more, I believe, than a geographical formation from the eruption of a volcano a very long time ago

I was told they are for the drainage/passage of water from the mountains and higher land. They have to be kept there to allow for the passage of water.

Barrancos are just ravines or valleys carved in the softer lava over the centuries by water runoff. They perform the same purpose as river beds but in the south of Tenerife are dry most of the time.

If you have the opportunity either the walk up the Barranco del Infierno to the waterfall at the top or a walk down the Barranco de Masca (if it has re-opened after the fire) you will see some fantastic lava formations.

I believe thats correct, except now they put in large pipes fill over them and build on them, which works fine until rocks block the pipes, the pressure then builds, finds the weakest spot, and explodes out, taking fair chunks of whatever is above it, with it

There is a big man-made looking one near Las Veronicas strip in Las Americas. Has anybody got a picture of it with water in it? A substantial amount? I've only ever seen it with fetid smelling pools in it.
Cheers.
Dave.

In the distant past, when Teide was erupting serioiusly for hundreds of thousands of years; there must have been a large water-vapour enriched volcanic cloud that rained heavily for hundreds of years at a time.

The barrancos are testament to that huge ancient rainfall and flooded valleys. The evidence is plain to see.

That is not a barranco. Barrancos are natural
