What are the driving licence rules for scooters/motorbikes in Tenerife?

What is the biggest size bike that you can ride here in Tenerife, with a normal driving license?

Maximum without a licence specifically for a motorbike is 125cc. But I think you can ride a bigger one if it has been doctored to restrict its power. The motorbike would be described as 'limitada en papeles'. I'm no expert, so correct me, somebody, if I'm wrong.

Really? I thought you were limited to 50cc anywhere in Europe if you didn't have a licence... interesting.

I think that's true here too. What JAnot was talking about was a licence that wasn't specifically for motorbikes.

Basically Hubby needs something to get him back and forth to work cheaper than a car, and we need to know which is the biggest engine he could have.
We were hoping that it would be bigger than a 50cc.

I thought it was 50cc on a provisional licence... or if you can drive, but haven't passed a bike test. If it's more, then I would be interested to know that too...

Mind you, Sue, you can get some cars over here that are cheaper than bikes... I know of one for sale for 150€ at the moment. It needs a couple of tyres and putting through the ITV though, however it's a good car...

Have a look HERE. It appears that you can ride a 50cc with no licence at all (or a provisional licence), and a 125 with a normal driving licence. Any larger bike and you need a specific bike licence.

Thanks. That is what I thought. The Bloke doesn't have a licence, so he would be limited to 50cc... not really good for these hills

No, I don't think a 50cc would be enough for him ... the road up to Chio climbs all the time. Jeremy was almost going to buy a 125 at first, but decided that even that just wouldn't have enough power for Vera de Erques. I think a 125 would be the minimum for comfort if even a slight hill is involved.
