Question I would like to visit the locals in Tenerife, where should I go?

Hi, when i next visit your beautiful island i am hoping to maybe visit areas that are not purpose built for the tourists,
Have you any suggestions as to where i can visit to get a feel of the REAL tenerife, and meet the real tenerfe people (are they called teneriians?? sorry for my lack of knowledge) where the locals shop, local craft shops etc, that sort of thing

Help and advise would be fantastic

One part of me wants to quote the song "The only way is 'up'" (although I hate it!) but seriously UP the mountains to the small villages and away from the coasts you will easily find the real Tenerife. Choose a small town like Garachico or San Miguel and explore it on foot: it's amazing what you see of peoples lives when you hit the footpaths between houses and through plantations and Cyberhiker will help you plan more complicated routes.
On the other hand the locals are as solid as the volcanic rock and are all around us, the heart of the island, carrying on their lives: fiestas, religion, customs, funerals and fun but we're often too busy doing the 'sun things' to notice!
Enjoy exploring..... there's masses to see.... even cave dwellers!

You can even find them on the coast....

try El Peurtito on a Sunday just a few minutes up the coast from PDLA.

I like to think of myself as local and i live in Golf Del Sur for 8 years and try to speak the language and this is my home....... as with other forum members i am sure they will feel the same......
We try to integrate and accept this is the country we live in.

Try to get away from a them and us mentality although when you meet the red tape its difficult, but its a different way, and if you live here you have to accept it although over time (long) time it will come right
But on a plus point we don't get the cold wind or rain and if you use your eyes the scenery is spectacular and lovely people
although i have to appear grumpy

Good luck to you but try to open your mind

That's it! He's local, he's safe and he'd take you for a long walk round the golf course..... it would save you from climbing the mountain!
