Can anyone suggest where to go camping in Tenerife?
A friend of mine wants to take his son camping up in the mountain. Its just the two of them, male bonding session. He doesnt want to be on a campsite just somewhere picturesque and off the beaten track.Any suggestions for him guys?
I dont know about up in the mountains but I have taken my 4 year old to the montana roja site. It is great as it has all the amenities that you may need as well as there own tents
There is access onto the beach and if they want to do some exploring there is the rock pools further along the beach.
I know he isnt after a campsite but I think you need to be careful where you pitch your tent, especially in the mountains

Much as I love the mountains I would think camping there would be a bit of a trial. Being hit 0n the head by huge pine cones from a great height, freezing cold and damp, approached by rangers (it IS a national heritage site), bitten by mosquitos, attacked by wild dogs, crawled on by lizards and no loo or cafe....
Sorry. My idea of a bit of bonding would be ....anywhere but...

We could bond really well with a nice jug of sangria or in a cocktail bar(for us)or in an ice cream parlour (with a youngster).

Wild camping is great fun. Although I haven't done it for some years now, I've had some amazing trips in the highlands of Scotland and the north of England in the past spending up to a week in 'the wilds' under canvas. On Tenerife, you don't have to camp in the National Park boundary, there are plenty of remote places outside of it where you can pitch a tent. I've often seen tents discreetly pitched in places like the Anaga mountains in the north. It is probably 'technically' illegal but it is in England as well and that doesn't stop people. You are hardly likely to get someone patrolling the mountains in the dark looking for tents! The main problem in Tenerife, as the link suggests is a supply of water. You can only realistically carry enough for one day.

Memories of beating down molehills, waking up in the long-grass morning dew having slid down the hillside out of the tent when a Girl Guide. Cows mooing, soaking sleeping bag, trudging amidst clods to get to a bowl of washing water and cracking the ice before freezing fingers made contact.....Noooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!
All followed by a day of enthralling activity whittling, hunting feathers in awkward places, trudging miles uphill and down dale, lighting a camp fire and being force-fed baked beans and grey 'hot chocolate' and feeling cold, wet and dreaming of wearing a radiator .........Noooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!

Most of the recreational zones, have camping areas. ie Las Lajas(just past Vilaflor). These also have the added bonus of having BBQ areas, running water and toilets. Although on most of the sites the toilet facilities close around 8pm. You can not camp in the National Park and the Rangers are very strict and it does entail fines.
Above is a link that lists all recreational areas and camping zones and the facilities on them. They are mainly free but you do need to apply for a permit from the Cabildo at least 4 days before you go. You can contact them via the website. We didn't realise this to begin with and to be honest got away with it once, but the second time the Park Ranger did get abit stropy.
I would personally recommed the sites at Los Frailes and San Jose de los Llanos.
Hope you have a good time.
