I've been exploring some of the coastal towns to the east of the airport. They are reachable from the TF1 motorway, and the other day, it was the turn of Salida 19 - the exit leading to El Rocas/La Caleta.
Two things struck me about this Canarian fishing village:
1: I've seen old photos of Los Cristianos, where the sunbathers on the beach shared with fishing boats. Well, El Rocas beach is still like that; and not crowded - even on the Sunday afternoon I visited.
2: I've heard much about, and visted Los Abrigos. It is the place where you can eat a meal of freshly-caught fish. El Rocas, however is the real deal - and is not aimed at tourists.
I dropped into one of the bar/restaurants there for late lunch. There is no menu. You go to the cold-display, and pick out the fish/seafood you want, which is put in a tray and whisked off to the kitchen. All the seafood/fish in the cold display has been caught that morning.
My fish arrived 10-15 minutes later, having been cooked to perfection in salt. My other half had fresh-cooked mussels and fried octopus. All served with a large ensalada,
home made salsa mojo and rolls.
The restaurant was busy - full of Canarian families enjoying the same superlative food in a buzzing, friendly atmosphere. The service was fast and polite. Total cost; with drinks etc was a touch over 30 euro for two. They will pack any leftovers for you to take home (the servings can be LARGE!) Not the cheapest - but definitely the best.
The beaches of La Caleta and El Rocas are linked via a short walk past a Canarian caravan club site. The habour of El Rocas is a little like Los Abrigos in size, whereas neighboring La Caleta beach is almost like a swimming pool.
The atmosphere is very 'Canarian', and well worth a visit. I would recommend arriving for your fish lunch before 1pm if possible, as the day's catch decreases as it is eaten by other people!
