A few words are OK, but a phrase or longer text, ends up as real rubbish
This will always be the case.
Translators are wonderful things and work really well providing you understand how they work – ie logically.
The downside of them is that you have to be very good at English and understand how the english language works and also have quite a good idea of how the language that you are translating into, works.
If you copy and paste a couple of paragraphs of Spanish text – something from Spanish ‘officialdom’ is always good for a laugh, and then translate it into English, the result is gobbledygook. This is not because the translator doesn’t work, it’s because the text is written in a way that Spanish people have grown up with and understand.
The most important thing when trying to use a translator to translate into Spanish is to make sure that your English is grammatically correct and keep things simple.
So: ‘I would have had to have gone to the bank but Marie said that she was going to have to go anyway’ should be condensed to ‘I did not go to the bank. Marie went for me’
Try to avoid … I’ve, couldn’t, won’t etc etc. Instead, write things out in full … I have, could not, will not.
Colloquialisms will never translate into anything meaningful, so avoid them at all costs: She’s off her trolley … you’re pulling my leg … you’re having me on etc

Another thing as well about translators. It's on the same subject as Mike has just told us about.
Use a translator to translate a paragraph from English to Spanish. Then copy and paste the translation. Use the same program to copy it back to English, and logically, it should translate it back. It comes out usually as a mish mash that doesn't really make that much sense. This is, as Mike points out, because the structure of the language is different.
'Do you speak Spanish?' roughly translates to 'Speak you Spanish?'

The phrase is not actually correct English, so a translator will create rubbish. However, use the correct English 'can you' or 'are you able to' speak Spanish and it will work.

Another very good site that was passed onto me from our moderator Kirsty is www.freetranslation.com
I use it often, and find it extremely useful.
I use this one too. It give you the gist of what you need. No good for writing a letter or anything like that but if you type in the spanish it gives you an idea of what the meaning is. I use for Instructions in Spanish
