    Re: The difference between Spanish and Canary Islands Spanish

    I have a question for all who are long term on the island or native... can you tell if a Canarian is from the North, or Santa Cruz or Los Cristianos - are there different accents on this small island of Tenerife ... I presume there are differing ones for each island ?

    I dont think theres much variation. I know that each island is slightly different, and there are differences in some words, but its not much. Its probably more along the lines of urban / rural than specific area. But, i wouldnt know too much about that. I base this on just the fact that ive never noticed a huge difference between south american and canary islands spanish, so i assume that theres even less difference between the islands.

    An excellent post,

    I have lived in the Granadilla area for 3 years now, we speak reasonable canarian, but we have a few old neighbours that we can not understand a single word from, the younger generation tend to speak a little slower maybe than the older folk. anyway canarian is a lovely language, i believe a lot more relaxed that spanish, catalan etc

    I sat at a meeting recently with three Argentinians - it did sound different to me than what I hear native Canarians speak ... had to ask my friends to speak "real" Spanish so I could understand

    Ni = neither
    que = that (used as a conjunction, in the sense of : i told him that i did it)
    poco = a bit

    Weird. "neither that a bit..."

    Quita palla

    Quita = get off, remove
    Pa(ra) (a)lla = to over there

    As in, if someone is close to you and you want them to get away.

    My minds blank, i cant think of any more right now.

    Aye que bueno

    yes the pa'lla phrase !

    Re: The difference between Spanish and Canary Islands Spanish

    I love the canarian language compared to spanish, and i find it much easier to understand. when i moved here i was seeing a man who was born and brought up in la orotava and when i spoke to others from the south i was asked if i'd learnt the language in the north so i guess there are slight differences in accents, maybe leafar can tell us more and thanks to leafar for the phrases, more of these would be great i can speak a bit of catalan too but that's another completely different language.

    Lets not go totally overboard and consider a few handfuls of words that differ in context as being a language in it´s own right because that would be a gross exaggeration.

    Re: The difference between Spanish and Canary Islands Spanish

    I consider it more a local dialect or accent rather than a separate language

    The more I hear it the more it reminds me of the Yorkshire dialect compared to Standard English.
