Spanish to English Fish translations in Tenerife.

Thought this might help people when they are stood at the fish counter or looking in the freezers wondering what is what!

Or for the people that like to eat out in fish restaurants this should help!

    Fish Translations

The Spanish have two different names for fish. When alive they are called 'peces' and when they're being served on a plate they're referred to as 'pescado'. If it isn't complicated enough you will find at least a dozen different fish on the menu.

    Aguja Azul (Blue Marlin)
    Anchoa (Anchovies)
    Atún (Tuna fish)
    Bacalao (Cod)
    Caballa (Mackrel)
    Cherne (Sea bass)
    Congrio (eel)
    Corvina (Corb)
    Dorada (Gilt head fish)
    Lenguado (Sole)
    Mero (Grouper fish)
    Merluza (Hake)
    Morena (Moray eel)
    Pez. Espada (Sword fish)
    Rodaballo (Turbot)
    Sama (-local fish-)
    Sardinas (Sardines)
    Vieja (Parrot fish)
    Calamar (Squid)
    Chipirón (Baby squid)
    Choco (Cuttle fish)
    Pulpo (Octopus)

re: Spanish to English Fish translations in Tenerife.

A bit of research shows Cherne is more often called Cherna and the full name is polyprion americanum - which I have found translated at Atlantic Wreckfish

    PESCADOS TIPICOS DE LANZAROTE

gives photos and names for fish in the local seas and translates it as Wreckfish or Stone Bass
