Comer/Tomar when talking about food & eating in Spanish

Please do not post in Spanish unless it is a question or reply about the language.

PS You may 'tomar' a drink, but you would 'cenar' an evening meal (dinner)
can't tomar also be used in the context 'had' ie
me tomé la sopa - i had soup
tomé desayuno - i had breakfast

"Eat" and "have" can both be used with any food. "Have" can also be used with beverages?

(consume) ‹steak/spaghetti› comer, tomar;
to ~ something to eat/drink comer/beber algo;
to ~ breakfast desayunar;
to ~ lunch almorzar(conj.?) or (esp Esp, Méx) comer;
to ~ dinner cenar, comer (AmL)

Yes, you are correct, but 'the norm' (what most Spaniards would say) is something like:

¿Te gustaría tomar una copa más tarde?

but

¿Te gustaría cenar más tarde?

Don't interrupt me when I'm ignoring you!

I'd love to see things from your point of view but I can't get my head that far up my bum.

used in that sense ¿Te gustaría cenar más tarde? - Would you like to have dinner later? it wouldn't make sense using 'tomar' because your wanting to refer solely to dinner.

Tomar and /or Comer (my advise)

My advise is the following:
Use "tomar" when you want to mean "to have" (i.e. food and drinks)and "comer" when you want to mean "to eat" (i.e. for everything but beverages).
