Has anyone on the Tenerife Forum any personal recommendations for learning Spanish?

I'm 17 and from Year 8 until the first 3 months of Year 9 in England I was taught basic Spanish. When we moved over here, at 13, I never really got around to picking it up fluently and I was just wondering if anybody has actually learnt Spanish over here and can recommend the best person/programme.

I like to think I'm best at learning from a teacher rather than from books because then at least I know how thing are pronounced.

I know there's a few threads asking but rather than just asking for people, I'd like to also know your personal stories of how you learnt Spanish and how long it took you to be fluent.

The first Spanish word I learned was "almohada". That'll give you a clue as to where I learned it.

So my advice is to get a Spanish boyfriend.

One of the best ways to learn Spanish here (so I have heard) is to listen to Spanish radio, watch Spanish TV and read menus, newspapers etc in Spanish. I always try to talk in Spanish to the Spanish, and they are so understanding, they seem to love it.(although I don't quite know what I am saying, which is a concern)

A recomendation is to start a crash course in Spanish, followed by individual tuition. Also I have an electronic gadget that translates words and phrases over 5,000,000 (yes I am excited by it, and of course the language)!

My Spanish is definitely not that good, but I speak Japanese and French. My tips for learning a language are:

read newspapers in the language

read novels in the language

watch movies in the language, and try not to look at the subtitles if there are any

By own experience, listening to the radio and watching TV does not help at all, unless you are being given the translation and the speakers talk very slooowly stopping at the end of sentences so you have time to reflect on what they were speaking.

Of course, they don't. You might as well listen to the rush of a waterfall.

Instead use a bilingual DVD of a film you are interested in. At first, watch the English version to know what it is all about. Then watch the English version with Spanish subtitles, then the Spanish version with English subtitles and at last, watch the Spanish version without subtitles. Do it in chunks of about five to ten minutes. Max.

After three months you might be able to repeat the dialogues by heart. Don't choose a crime or thriller even if you might be interested in because you can't utilise these types of dialogues in everyday situations. At least, you shouldn't.

I recommend a comedy , maybe a love story.

Hi - I found that when I was learning English I read books in English that I had already read in Norwegian and knew the story. That way I could follow what was going on and pick up vocabulary at the same time.
I have downloaded the spanish course I'm using now onto my ipod (I am still in England), so no excuses when I'm out and about! Good luck.
