Remember : It's ok to learn lots of words, but the quickest way to increase you vocabulary is to learn how to conjugate a verb correctly. Then, when you learn a new verb you instantly know about 7 more words and can explain yourself better.
Good books to have for reference (click for amazon.co.uk page) :

I think the Michel Thomas audio tapes worked the best for me. I learnt basic spanish in no time at all

The linkword book is great... it teaches you loads of words and silly sentences and gives you word association ways of remembering them. You find you can remember everything really easily and the silly sentences help you work out the grammar for yourself rather than just learning to 'parrot' sentences... therefore you can then work out what you want to say.
My mum has a good audio CD set, but I'm not sure who it's by. It's really boring to listen to the bloke on it, but it works. It basically shows you that there are loads of Spanish and English words that are VERY similar and teaches you how to remember them that way. It's also good for grammar. EDIT: Just had a look at who did the CD's and sure enough, it's Michael Thomas!
Whatever you do, stay away from 'phrase' books! All you will know from learning from those is the phrases... god help you if someone replies slightly differently than the phrase it says when you ask where the laudrette is
