Re: Tenerife is starting to sound like a cheap holiday again

Interesting thread. Funnily enough, I was going start a new thread and make a long post about my own feelings concerning the promotion of Tenerife as a tourist destination. Now, this is being discussed here and there is no need.
We returned from Tenerife last weekend, had a great time as you can read in my previous posting. However, I do feel Tenerife needs to re-position itself as far as attracting new visitors. This forum does a superb job in promoting Tenerife, so in some ways it's like preaching to those who are already converted. But how many of you believe the tourist board is doing enough to attract discerning visitors ? Do you really think Tenerife can survive on the sun, sea and sex brigade that made Tenerife so popular for decades ?
I think tourism was already in decline before the current recession. The 18-30 groups have found other destinations, being honest there are probably better alternatives for families with young children. That leaves the Island more reliant on the older winter visitors. Tenerife has so much to offer that has never been exploited, but ask the average Brit and you will find pre-conceived ideas based on a tiny part of the Island that became famous ( or notorious) through a couple of tv programs. I don't think it's necessarily about going "up market", it's just about promoting what you already have. It's about changing those pre-conceived notions about the Island. Members of this forum love Tenerife, they are not all boozed-up, kebab-eating, sun readers, with piercings and tatoos. Why should you want to "pitch" Tenerife exclusively to those sort of people ?

Oh dear, oh dear, that means even more football shirts, tattoos, Sun readers and crap karaoke singers will be on the Island.

I was rather hoping that it would be going "up-market" a bit.

Providing goods and services up to a standard, rather than down to a price.
My daughter came over to visit us last christmas with her 3 children. The 2 boys had their favourite " Chelsea football shirts that they were proud to wear" £65 each. As a family of 7 we were welcome everywhere whether we had football shists or the latest fake Lacoste for £6. we were continualy pestered by timeshare dicks half ****ed and looked as if they lived in their clothes. What do you want ? a load of autonoment clones or normal cash spending tourists dressed in what they feel comfortable in. Whatever they wear they all have pockets!! Look at the locals "spanish not the pseudo residents" i was over a few weeks ago and it seemed as though half the population had tenerife shirts on. Whats that saying "GET A LIFE"

As in Jimand billi no mates! lol!

Tenerife as a holiday destination is what you want to make of it! If you just want to sit by the pool and enjoy the sun and a few drinks then fine! Or if you want to explore the island and its cultures... well that's fine! But everyone has different ideas about their ideal holiday and I think Tenerife caters for everyone! Even the celebrities enjoy Tenerife!

Hey Leo what about the shirt that I am wearing? That's blue and white! lol.

If somebody wants to wear a football shirt on their hols then great! Whatever people are comfortable in! To say that people that who wear football shirts have tattoos and piercings, are sun readers is a bit of a generalisation! Their money still spends!

So the next time I'm over, I'll expect to see all of the shops / bars / restaurants / apartments around Plaza del Duque up for sale / rent due to a complete lack of "up-market" customers / clients ?

Or is that sort of area a bit different to the one being discussed on this post ?

Pseudo??? Meaning? I suppose you live in the same street in the same house you were born in , in the same city?

Dont forget for the non British Tourist , it has always been cheap. There is a huge spike in the Irish market , just ask bar owners or apartment owners.

As for the football shirt wearing people , not my taste but each to there own and to hell with the snobs. I saw a group of people from Sheffield in a bar the other night , they were what you might call "football shirt wearing people". There was about 20 of them and I was talking to the bar owner next day and between food and all the drink the put over €600 behind the bar. More of these people I say. As a matter of fact if ever I own a bar I think I'll give discounts to people who show their colours Opps did I say discounts, slap on the wrist for me.

We have people coming on here saying Tenerife is too expensive and yet wanting an up market clientele. So what are they looking for skin flint rich people.

I suppose what I'm trying to say is theres a place on this big island for all and I for one hope it returns to its good for value past as I do think it is. Dont think it went away actually.

A couple of questions have been put to him but, he has not replied, we can all say what is wrong with something, without having a clue how to fix it, that is if it needed fixing at all.

Yes Susie, and very similar to my first football team..Bristol Rovers. You play in halves, we play in quarters. I only started supporting Chelsea when we moved to London, but that was over 30 years ago. Still watch out for all the Rovers results, you never forget your first love.

BTW..I never said anything about people wearing football shirts in my post ! I did say about piercings and tatoos, my apologies..I am sure they can be quite tasteful, it's probably a generation thing. And I have enjoyed the odd kebab..but I make no apologies to Sun readers.
