If the restaurants stop dishing up Iceland frozen meals & cook fresh instead, they may be worth the money. If they sell a decent pint rather than dishwater it may be worth the money................. but they don't & won't!

So Tenerife is about CHEAP! Cheap beer & food at cheap prices, if you want quality & value for money.............. then you need to holiday somewhere else.

Why are you living here then? I think you have a very warped attitude. If you want cheap there is cheap on the other hand if you are high maintainance like me you pay for better accomodation etc.

There will always be holidaymakers who can only afford 'cheap' so if they enjoy their holiday and feel refreshed after it,good on 'em.

As for holidaying elsewhere......why run Tenerife down by that statement because thats what you are doing. Do you call the Bahai del Duque cheap, the Mare Nostrum Resort cheap, no, and as for quality and value for money........you get what you pay for.

I love Tenerife.....tack and all......what I don't like is folk running it down,it has its problems at the moment like all holiday resorts but it will even out.All resorts be it Tenerife or Marbella has tack of some sort or other we don't have to go these quarters if we don't want to.

    Rant over

Re: Tenerife is starting to sound like a value for money holiday destination again

To go back to the beginning of this thread I think my past experiences of Tenerife may clarify things from a tourist point of view.
I first came here about 10 years ago for a cheap last minute holiday. I chose Tenerife because of the weather at that particular time of year & because it was renowned for it's cheap bars, entertainment, good clubs & more cheap bars, we weren't too flush at the time. However when people asked me where I was going on hols I realised I was embarrassed to say because Tenerife had a 'bad' reputation (Veronicas!).
When I got here I was pleasantly suprised. Sure it had the cheap bars, entertainment galore etc. etc but it was lush & green & the prom was breathtaking in places. I found that I was 'comfortable' here probably because of the large expat community.
When I booked further holidays we always had one a year in Tenerife & gradually we found the real Tenerife. The stunning cliffs of Los Gigantes, the little mountain villages, the tucked away eateries etc etc & we were getting more & more hooked.
Tenerife is an Island of contrasts, something for everyone, but you don't discover that till you get here.
I guess what I am trying to say is we were lured over by cheap Tenerife & then hooked by real Tenerife.
The beer swilling, kebab eating tourist in PDLA are Tenerifes 'bread & butter' & Tenerife needs them, some will never discover real Tenerife & some will only ever want that kind of holiday but some will look around like us & say 'wait a minute' their is more to this place than we realised & they will become your regulars who spend more time here & promote Tenerife to others.
I agree that Tenerife tourist board needs a kick up the jacksy & start doing their job. Turkey, Croatia, Cyprus all have stunning adverts on TV at the mo but Tenerife is becoming the forgotten Spain. I was stunned when a medical student said the other day 'where is Tenerife'. Whaaaaat!
So however much some posters who live in Tenerife hate the 'grokkels' (westcountry for tourist) you need them.

I think in the past it was the Sun reading, football shirt wearing Brit who made Tenerife but surely there is room for all.If thats what bring in the cash into the ecconomy so be it.I am not a holiday snob, it takes all sorts to make a holiday destination, you don't need to frequent the places that have fast food and football.Get a car and drive out and see whats on offer on the island...............you may be pleasantly surprised.

This reply proves how some times a comment can be taken totally the wrong way . The negativity and jealousy was actually aimed at residents here. It doesn't matter if you like it or not it exsists and that can only be a bad thing . I wasn't even thinking of this being aimed at you over there to be honest with you . Sorry you took it the wrong way . There is much more than sun , cheap booze and fags here , this island is extremely beautiful and when you know it well and know the places to visit it always takes my breath away to be honest even after all this time .

Re: Tenerife is starting to sound like a value for money holiday destination again

well a nice little read on a saturaday morning.

where do i start ok will start with the title of this thread.

my friends who are over at the moment have found even with the poor exchange rate the are some good deals at the moment.

take for example the other day scotch corner the pub 6 large breakfast 2 of everything with a soft drink or tea or coffee 5 euros each.

starbar 2 meals for 7 euros.

wigan pier specail offers on drinks.

just a couple of really good examples of how some of the well known business that are going out their way to get in the customes and look after them.
    very good value for money.

i did notice during some live preimer football matches not so long ago tenerife was being advertised think they spent a desent amount of money doing so,also there is a advert on tv only saw it last night plugging one of the islands.
i am sure the powers that be have everyones intrest at heart when it comes to plugging the canarias and hope they continue doing so.

i do agree with some of the things lincinus has said about tenerife there are some right dives here cant name it but was in one myself the other night it was dirty rubbish service the chief smoking at the bar i hate to say it but cheif my arse dirty uniform when asked if i was going to eat there no way never in a million years disgusting.
but lets be honest there have and always will be dives like this here in tenerife.

but tenerife has changed alot over the years and looking at it now its improved a hell of alot.
tenerife is a wondeful island and i would love to hire a bus and take people around the island and show them the REAL tenerife not just the beach or a british bar selling 1 euro pints there is so much more to this island if people are willing to open their eyes.

YG there are "Dives" , all over the world . I always say that there is good and bad where ever you go in the world . I do think that Tenerife has to shake off this old image though that it has still . It has come a long way and is far nicer these days than ever before . It has so much going for it here and with the right kind of promotion that image could be improved .

Any one reading this thinking of coming over please do you will love it and book Young Golfers Coach trip while you are here !!

Why would I want to do that, Tenerife is my home??? Tenerife may have a 'bit' of everything for every budget indeed there are a couple of nice places on the island but it is & always will be a 'cheap' resort!

This thread is going round in circles, I think we all know what Tenerife has to offer wether good or bad, it is simply a matter of personal choice. The 'cheap crap' will always exist- if you dont like it -avoid it!
