To go back to the beginning of this thread I think my past experiences of Tenerife may clarify things from a tourist point of view.
I first came here about 10 years ago for a cheap last minute holiday. I chose Tenerife because of the weather at that particular time of year & because it was renowned for it's cheap bars, entertainment, good clubs & more cheap bars, we weren't too flush at the time. However when people asked me where I was going on hols I realised I was embarrassed to say because Tenerife had a 'bad' reputation (Veronicas!).
When I got here I was pleasantly suprised. Sure it had the cheap bars, entertainment galore etc. etc but it was lush & green & the prom was breathtaking in places. I found that I was 'comfortable' here probably because of the large expat community.
When I booked further holidays we always had one a year in Tenerife & gradually we found the real Tenerife. The stunning cliffs of Los Gigantes, the little mountain villages, the tucked away eateries etc etc & we were getting more & more hooked.
Tenerife is an Island of contrasts, something for everyone, but you don't discover that till you get here.
I guess what I am trying to say is we were lured over by cheap Tenerife & then hooked by real Tenerife.
The beer swilling, kebab eating tourist in
PDLA are Tenerifes 'bread & butter' & Tenerife needs them, some will never discover real Tenerife & some will only ever want that kind of holiday but some will look around like us & say 'wait a minute' their is more to this place than we realised & they will become your regulars who spend more time here & promote Tenerife to others.
I agree that Tenerife tourist board needs a kick up the jacksy & start doing their job. Turkey, Croatia, Cyprus all have stunning adverts on TV at the mo but Tenerife is becoming the forgotten Spain. I was stunned when a medical student said the other day 'where is Tenerife'. Whaaaaat!
So however much some posters who live in Tenerife hate the 'grokkels' (westcountry for tourist) you need them.
