I think you just have to keep a level head when shopping and shop around. Unfortunately some places make up their own rules and prices which is really annoying. Since I started at uni in October I started working part time at Sainsbury's. I haven't worked in a shop since I was a teenager, but it really opens your eyes. For example, we had a sale on mobile phones and one brand had like 50 quid off them. All the local store owners were flocking into the store and buying dozens at a time and selling them in their own stores, 60 quid dearer than what we were selling them for...... just shows you!![]()

Most shops don't clearly show prices and its so annoying, cos I am not buying by price, but I don't want to go through a ton of hassle just to find the price. Most of the shops in the resort ask way, way too much and you MUST refuse to pay the asking price. One shop tried asking a mammoth price for a suitcase and we got it down to a third of the initial asking price and it was still expensive, but we were desparate!
I agree that something should be done about the number of fake items and that runs through a whole range of products. I can only think the police sell a lot of tickets for their annual ball, or they can't be bothered with the paperwork.

Why should the way you shop in Tenerife be any different from anywhere else? Of course you have to shop around, of course people will try and charge as much as they can. It's business and if you are daft enough to pay over the odds, people will let you.

True, but where in the UK do you find items without prices on, except the markets? Imagine going into Currys for a dvd and asking the price to be told something ridiculous like, 500 quid!!! Trading standards would be on them like a ton of bricks, yet its quite acceptable here.![]()

I think if you're in the market for something expensive like a watch, camera, 'designer' bag etc etc then you must do research. Have a good look around shops and compare. If you're in the south then go north and explore Santa Cruz.
In the Uk we have a magazines for almost everything, so maybe someone can send you one, so you can look up various prices. The internet is probably the fastest place to explore, or even Ebay - just place an item on 'watch' and see how much it sells for. There are magazines in Tenerife also and you can Google/Spain Google also (for those whose spanish is OK).
And why support your local crime network by buying fakes, whether its from the guys who pester you at bars/restaurants, some of the shops, and especially the markets? Just don't buy the bloody stuff. What do fakes say about you?
I think you have to try to avoid the purchase on a whim, or if you do don't belly ache about how much you paid afterwards. I've done that with a camera, though for me the deal was good, but in the same 'sangria' mood (in Tenerife) went into a dress shop and spent over £150 on a dress (not for me!!!).

well people do seem to be getting ripped off . A girl I know on the morning of new years day got a taxi from the Safari centre to Castle harbour, 40€Everyone in the queue was asked where they were going and then told the price it would be. Two choices, pay or walk. Two women, not together, came to my shop both having changed 100 quid each in town on Sunday, 1st one got 83€, 2nd one 85€. How these kind of things are allowed to go on is a joke. I think any shop giving less than a point or two under the rate should be closed. Don't know if its getting worse but I do seem to be hearing of it more often.

i totally agree! It i so deprssing going shopping for anything in tenerife, especially the indian shops. You just know that they want to rip you off. Many a time i have priced things up and come back later to purchase them only to be told it has gone up because the price didnt include the lead, the disc etc... Most of the time i dont even bother looking in the small shops anymore, you are better off going to mayer or if you can,go up north to carrefour or el campo. You will get things easier and cheaper, and also get a valid reciept if any thing goes wrong.Something must be done about these indian shops just making up prices as they go along.I feel sorry for all the people they have ripped of!!![]()
