All I needed was my passport and my NIE cert. That was for Caja Canarias, around eight months ago. I just went to the teller and said something like: "Necesito abierto una cuenta, por favor, pero no hablo Espanol" and he sent me over to a lady who spoke English and everything was sorted within ten minutes or so. Dave.

how easy is it to open a bank account in tenerife and what do i need
Hi! Nige.........All you will need initially is a passport plus 100€ to deposit into the account......If you require a residents account you will need to provide your NIE certificate... The above is to open an account with Sol Bank....they also provide your statements etc. in English....

I would suggest all ex-pats who are non-Spanish reidents read the Tenerife Sun out today. Apparently Spanish banks are in the process of freezing the accounts of all non-Spanish residents. By that I mean accounts of anyone who has opened a bank account without an NIE number and have not reported themselves as "non-resident" to the police.
The article relates stories of direct debits not being paid from the aforementioned accounts. As if people don't have enough problems with Telefonica!

Just opened an account today with Halifax - they were advertising in the market. All I needed was passport and driving licence, I took my NIE number but they didn't want it. All the staff speak excellent English and because I have an account with Halifax in the UK all transfers to the account here are free!!! I also get a debit card so no more charges for spending my money out here. There is a 25 euro annual fee but you get access to english telephone banking etc. Really friendly!!!!
