Question Is it normal to be charged for the first service on a new car?

I bought a new car last year from Renaut when I took it for it's first service I was charged I thought the first service was free other than oil etc
does this happen with all new cars

i bought my car there too 2 years ago at that time i was told that i would get a FREE oil change on 10.000 miles so in i went very quick i might add but had to pay about 40 euros when i asked the girl who sold me the car she said oh no we dont do that,i dont think its somthing a customer would make up themsleves so beware if they say somthing at the time of sale get them to write it down very naughty.

i think it must it was the same for us when we brought a ford Ranger we took it back for its first service and we had to pay, we then later developed a knocking on the front end so took it back to them which they repaired for free but after about 6 months the canveer on the front right tyre was wearing so we took it to another garage and they told us that when we took it back to ford they had just altered the tracking to get rid of the knocking so there for it ended up costing us two new tyres aswell, never been back to ford since we use la palmas motors in guaragacho now for our services and any repairs we need

The mileage is important with new cars, or at least it is with Renault at Guaza. I bought my new car in January 2007. This January I took it in for the first service. As there were only some 4000 kms on the clock they told me it would not need a service for another year on the basis of 10000 kms or 2 years.

HOWEVER, they also said even though it did not affect the service history, the smart move was to have the oil & filter changed now. So I went to the cafe round the corner & had a coffee, came back & it had been done for 38 euros.

DOUBLE HOWEVER with knobs on however. That is the one & only thing Renault at Guaza ever did right in the entire transaction. Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. never ever again.
