Do people come to start a business in Tenerife with rose-tinted glasses?

Do people come over here with rose tinted glasses. I was in the back street of los cris yesterday. Theres a new shop open sellings things. do not want to give to much away in case the people read the forum.. Anyway what they sell for 4 and 5 euro you can get in the chinese shop for 90 cents. I know from friends they are doing no bussiness. The only people laughing all the way to the bank is the landlords. I have 5 friends who open bussiness here and lost money. I would have loved to ask the owner yesterday why did he thinks his bussiness would take of here.Hate to see people rip off.

Is what they're buying worth 5 euros to them? If it's not, then they won't buy it. I wouldn't say anybody's being ripped off. If they get away with it, good for them.

No different to some of the other markups you see on the island. You seem to forget, shops have overheads.

Its your own english men that are been rip of by the canaries landlords. They get one years rent, then the bussiness last 3 months then they get another years rent. I saw a shop open and close four times in the year. Whos making the money only the landlord.

But you could say more fool the people who open businesses without thorough research beforehand.

A fair few businesses can fail through no fault of their own, but as you have pointed out, so many people arrive with rose tinted glasses.

Lets be honest, if you owned the locale, you want it rented out and your rent paying on time every month......end of story. That's business I'm afraid.

sorry but i fail to see how the landlords are to blame for this. the property is there, to be rented, for whatever the price is, nobody is forced into it! if the rent is too much, DONT RENT IT - its that simple......
    Insert witty remark here.....

The simple answer to this post is yes, Iwould say a large percentage of the people who come to open a business do so with rose tinted glasses.
I used to hear clients saying´well we will spend the day on the beach, nip home to change, open about 7, and if its quiet close early´
No idea on marketing, pricing, overheads just open the door and in theyll come not
Someone who would not dream of opening a business in theu.k. for some reason thinks¨i know lets travel 2000 miles to somewhere we dont even speak the same language and hand over our life savings¨
But the most galling part is we then have to listen to these same people blame everybody and everything else for their ineptitude

I don't that the majority of people on here that have informed us that they are returning back to the UK are wanting to blame others.
After the departing 747, line up and wait runway 08. Caution: VORTEX WAKE - recommended spacing 4 miles.

from my point of view you can not blame any one else it is your choice. do it or don't do it.

    one's that don't try don't get.

even sir alan sugar failed in the begining(then again he wasn't in tenerife lol).

anyways god loves a tryer(or is the a fryer not to sure lol)

Probably When I used to deal with commercial property, a lot of people wanted a 'quiet' bar. Why

It isn't just people moving here either. I was in a bar the other day that has been open one week.

I't a nice place with a great outside terrace that has fabulous views ... but ... it is in a bad location. People will see it on their way to one of the island's attractions - so they won't stop on the way there.

On the way back, the bar can't be seen, so people will have either forgotton or be too tired to stop.

The owners have lived on the island for 12 years. The food menu is 'German' snacks only and they didn't have the majority of what was on the menu available.

A friend and I were walking in the area and we were the only clients in over two hours (and our bill was 3.70 euros)

They are a lovely couple, but are paying 750 euros per month rent (which is cheap). Doomed to failure, I'm afraid

I'd love to see things from your point of view but I can't get my head that far up my bum.

You can't have everything - where would you put it !
