Spanish nationals traveling to the UK

Can a Spanish national travel to and from the UK with just their DNI card

Or would they have to obtain a Spanish passport ?

Anyone around the world can travel to the UK with whatever documentation they like and there will be no questions asked, they will be let straight in

On a more serious note, I do not know 100% but cannot imagine they would be allowed in without a passport

Passport. DNI is just Spanish ID. Once outside Spain, they need EU-wide ID, ie a passport.

Not so sure - my Step Mother, who is German, has entered both the UK and Tenerife using her standard German ID card. In fact, her passport had actually run out at the time she came here!

Now pray tell me how she did this? I spent may whole life travelling and have never once been through imigration anywhere without having my passport requested.

I have absolutely no idea - all I can tell you is that when we were talking about her and my Father's visit to the UK she told me her passport had expired but that she could travel on her German ID card. I didn't believe it either, but they let her into the UK. She did exactly the same into Tenerife two months later.

I can only assume the German ID cards hold more info than others perhaps....?

European Economic Area (EEA) citizens and Swiss nationals have the right of free movement and residence in the UK.

If you are a British citizen, a Swiss national or a national of a country in the EEA other than Bulgaria or Romania, you do not need permission to work in the United Kingdom.

From 1 January 2007 Bulgarian and Romanian nationals will not require an entry clearance to reside legally in the UK. Bulgarians and Romanians wanting to work in the UK will need to obtain permission to work before starting any employment. Information about living and working in the UK is available from the Working in the UK website.

There will be only a brief passport or identity card check on arrival in the United Kingdom.

If you stay in the UK other than as a short-term visitor, you can apply for a Residence Permit from the Border and Immigration Agency of the Home Office. This is normally valid for 5 years, confirms your right to live in the UK under European Community Law and allows you to apply for residence documents for any eligible family members with you who are not EEA citizens.

If you are a national of the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, or Slovenia and found a job in the UK, you must register under the Worker Registration Scheme. More information about this scheme is available on the Working in the UK website.

Non-EEA family members must get an EEA family permit before they travel to the UK if they are visa nationals (citizens of countries who always need visas to enter the UK), or if they are coming to live with you permanently or on a long-term basis.

The EEA family permit is a form of entry clearance and is issued free of charge. The permit will allow non-EEA family members to travel with you or join you in the UK

Your family members may come to the UK independently of you, but the normal UK Immigration Rules will apply, including visa requirements.

Although the UK is a member of the EEA, in general the information here does not apply to British citizens and members of their family.

Please read our Guidance - Visitors for more information.

I flew back to the UK in 2006 with a British Passport which was 6 months out of date! No one even took a look at it, but I was wary of anyone wearing Marigolds when I arrived in Liverpool!!
