Have a look HERE, by the way, for a thread on speed limits, and HERE and HERE for a couple of parking examples. | | | 7th January 2008, 17:06 | #3 (permalink) | | Regular Member Join Date: Jun 2007 Location: Here and there Gender: Posts: 51 | Quote: Originally Posted by Oneills381 just thought i would let the forum know that after 22 unblemished years of driving in the uk, me & the wife recently had the unfortunate task of paying into the local police christmas fund......... our first ticket was for a parking fine in the area near harleys. i have no idea why our car was picked as there were 6 more cars next to us, which never had any tickets. the policeman we payed stated that it was in a dangeous position??? this cost the wife 65euros the second donation to the christmas fund was when we were driving to los giganties, cant remember the area, but it was next to a load of banana crops. the last sign we saw was a sign stating 40 but i am positive this was for the town we just came out of...anyway we were pulled over and the policeman stated i was doing 76 in a 60 zone, we never saw any speed cameras or any one with a zap gun thing... do they hide in the tress and bushes or what? this i could accept, but the cars behind me who were up my backside cause i was too slow, got away scot free!!!! saying that tho, another 6 cars were pulled in after me as we stayed and watche for a bit... this cost me 70euros. has anyone else donated to this unbeliveable xmas fund? | Sometimes they are on a mission with targets set by the station, but generally I find that the police here are reasonably lenient with parking (if you are by your vehicle at the time) and with speeding (so long as you weren't going ridiculously fast). The key seems to be to at least attempt to speak to them in Spanish and to show a little good humour and humility. In the UK, its a national sport to berate the police when they pull you over. In Spain they generally won't tolerate it, particularly from a foreigner. The last time I got pulled over for speeding was on the dual carriageway past the Guayero and Comodoro in Los Cris. I was probably doing around or just over the 40kph limit (honest! lol) with the roof down and my friend's Golden Retriever 'Alfie' on the back seat. The policeman accused me of doing 60, which I definitely was not doing. Rather than argue, I looked him in the eye and said "Officer, if I do over 40kph with the roof down, Alfie gets a permanent mohican!" He started laughing and then waved me on my way with a warning. If I'd argued, I'd probably have got a ticket. | | | 29th December 2008, 21:24 | #4 (permalink) | | Newbie Member Join Date: Dec 2008 Location: Newcastle UK Gender: Posts: 2 | As a matter of intrest (since I have just got a speeding fine through the post for an offence in October) how can nyou pay a fine from the UK? I was supposedly doing 50 in 40 zone I supposedly had done this in September of the same year .The letter I picked up was 2 weeks before Christmas. As I saw no cameras no police car no police of any kind it set me thinking, maybe just maybe they sit at their Computers and find people who have had a previous fine ( I had a parking fine 2 years previous )as you said its Christmas Bonus time. The other times I had to contact the police they were both courteous and helpful.
