Why have my balcony railings got rusty when it hasn't rained in Tenerife since March?

Why have my railings on the balcony gone rusty since we haven't had rain since March?

It's now my mission to sort them out. I've asked for advice and it seems that I have to use a wire brush to scrape off the rusty bits before giving them a coat of 'minio hierro, rojo'. Then it's ok to paint them with white heraldite.

If anyone knows of a more simple plan please let me know.

rust

combo of dew and salt from the sea - if you'r close enough to the sea any metal bits on furniture will also discolor.

some metals when they react with any type of moisture and air will rust. If items are painted them the air will still permiate even the smallest crack, bearing in mind that paint will harden and often expands with the heat and then contracts with the cold which inturn makes it brittle and then cracks allowing air to penetrate.

Why not get a handyman to do it properly? Seems like the best bet for longterm success.
