I wish I could help Ally but after eighteen months of problems with my flamin' router, I moved to Direct Telecom. I admit there were teething troubles but for the last two months all has been well. Cheap calls too.

If its a ZyXEL router swith it on and connect to it via wifi or cable. Type http://192.168.1.1 in the Internet explorer bar at the top. If it asks for a username and password to log in try 1234 and 1234
Then go to wireless lan in the menu. Tick the box wireless lan, WEP encyption put to 128-bit WEP and then enter 13 character code and write it down. This is from memory because I binned my telefonica router as it kept stopping working. They should come preconfigured and security enabled and the security password is printed underneath the router. You can reset the router back to factory conditions by using a pen and pushing a small button for 10 seconds at the back of the router

You're right with the above info. As mentioned on another thread you can take the security up another level by entering your mac filter code.

On your pc go to the start button and select run.

Type cmd in the window and press return.

This will open a window with a dos prompt

Type ipconfig/all

This will give you a listing that includes your mac filter code in the wireless section it will be list of pairs of alphanumerics, for example

00:18:df:b0:6f:77

Then open your browser and type in the default gateway 192.168.1.1 (entering your password etc).

Select WirelessLan from the left hand side and then MAC Filter

Type your code in the available space and under Active select Yes and Action select Allow Association then click apply and it's done.

You will have to have sorted out the WEP encryption first but as explained above.
