Boating in Tenerife

Can you tell me, my hubby has always wanted to own a boat. He would like to get one when we move there, only for our benefit though. He hasn't got any experience in this and was thinking of learning the ropes here first, but would those with the knowledge recommend doing it in Tenerife first seeing all the regulations are different?

Are there opportunities to learn this in tenerfie?

I would recommend that your husband learns in this country first, there are plenty of RYA courses ( www.rya.org.uk )around the country, both practical and theory, covering all types of Boating, i.e. sailing, power boats, windsurfing etc.

One thing you learn when dealing with the sea, is that you can never have too much experience and learning around the coasts of the UK will give you the experience to handle most conditions around the world, then once you move to Tenerife get some lessons to learn local conditions.

I am not sure and maybe someone could clarify the situation but isn't there local (Tenerife) laws or rules about what you can & cant do in a boat?

I seem to remember that there are restrictions on how far off shore you can go etc with some quite large fines if you break them.

So, local knowledge is very important and not just about the sea conditions etc.

We have had a boat for the last nine years and had her shipped, via Fred Olsen, to Tenerife four years ago. This was expensive and we had to pay the equivalent of a 16% import tax when she arrived at the docks in Santa Cruz. Therefore, it would make sense to purchase here in Tenerife; there are a number of local Boat Sales operations.

There is a directive by the local Government that the ICC (International Certificate of Competence) is not deemed of sufficient standard compared to the Spanish qualification. It has been stated that you cannot take a boat more than 3 miles offshore with the standard ICC ticket. I will not voice my personal views on this criticism of competence.

I would add that you take a RYA course in the UK before coming here; that way you can find out if Coastal Boating is for you in terms of expense and competency. I will say that, having had our boat moored in Windermere, Swansea, Non tidal Thames at Windsor, tidal Thames at South Dock (opposie Canary Wharf) and finally at Port Solent (Portsmouth), we have experienced many new boaters who buy a boat, frighten themselves half to death and then sell up (usually at a loss).

Boating is fantastic; just remember that unlike a car, where you can pull over and phone the AA/RAC, you need to be paranoid about the safety/reliability of your boat and your own competence and that of your crew.

Hope this helps.
