I have never been aware of a high flightpath going South to North over Tenerife, but suddenly today there have been several aeroplanes following the same path, and all generating vapour trails. These have now generated an unusual cloud cover. Any explanations?

the word you mean is jetstream. Apparently there's so much energy in them that scientists are thinking of putting flying wind generators up!
