Hello there, and no, it isn't all that bad at all. What distorts your picture is that those who are content are usually silent. This is not the first foreign country which I have lived in, and my experience of Brits who live abroad is that there is always a minority who whine about the place, complain about the locals, the language, the food, the plumbing or everything. When challenged, they never seem to be able to answer the question why they live there, or they finally admit that they find the UK even worse.
It is always easy to find something to moan about when abroad, because it takes an effort to adapt. Or, on the other hand, if you want to imagine this island as England with the sun, then you will never be content because the foreign culture intrudes.
Have a look HERE for why people love where they live in Tenerife, HERE for fiestas, HERE (one of many) for Carnaval, HERE for helpful expats, HERE for proof that Tenerife is still pulling the crowds, HERE for wonderful views, HERE for the weather, HERE for a night sky that you'll struggle to find anywhere else on earth, HERE for wonderful beaches, and HERE, possibly my favourite thread on the whole forum ... why Tenerife has been a dream come true for so many ...
Tenerife's a great place to live, it allows me and my family a great lifestyle. Imagine living somewhere where the sun nearly always shine's, the scenery is stunning and most people are happy and care free. Granted it won't be for everyone but i certainly can't think of anywhere i'd rather be.

This is a wonderful island ... even more so if you can come here with money in your pocket and not have to work to pay your bills.
Yes, there is a lot of "moaning" about Tenerife on here ... but if it makes you think twice, sit down & redo your figures again and be realistic about your future on this great island, then all the negativity will have done you a great service

As Janet says there are many of us that are happy here....
But when you first arrive there seems to be a honeymoon period where everything is fabulous cause the sun shines each day...ok nearly each day...the wine and new friends welcome you with your effevecient personality then reality clicks in...
As with the uk everything has its ups and downs...and this brilliant site is a place for advice and support...
When I do not need advice...when everything is going merrily along...I don't make posts...
However there are many hurdles to jump over. Quiete a few people cannt hack the power of this rock and return to their native country or move on...we get use to the transience nature of the place....
Not so good an example for our kids forming long lasting relationships, but the possitives here (for my family) out weigh the negatives.
One of the reasons people seem to struggle here in Tenerife is making a living here...most are only payed 5 Euros an hour...less than my first wage 30 years ago...So it can be tough...maybe another reason is some are trying to escape something within...they take that with them where ever they rest...
Personally I think Mount Tiede's energy has been an overlooked power when dealing with depression on this rock
So yes read the posts and learn by our mistakes this is the island of eternal Springs. Many of us live each day like our last and enjoy it to its limits...so book your tickets and make that jump.

Yet another thoughtful post from JAnot but as Doreen says"come with money", obvious but true. I've lived here for 4 years so I'm no expert, but I seem to meet a lot of Brits here because they can't "hack it" in the UK and, having been on holiday think its all sun, and cheap booze, they invariably leave and they are usually amongst the worst whingers. Many come with the faint hope of running a successful business but fail to do their homework properly and have less chance of success here than they would in their native country. I believe that no matter what your level of income, you can enjoy a better lifestyle here than you can in the UK, BUT it is, as with any other "foreign" country, different. If you can get away from the "concrete jungle" of the purely tourist areas, then life can be excellent. I say "Go West Young Man" and I mean the west coast of Tenerife. If its culture and sophistication you are looking for, go north, but be prepared for many more less days in the sun that we get in the west.
Seek good advice, BEFORE you come here, and there's plenty of that available on this forum.
Good luck to you.

hi,i think tenerife's what you make it,me and my husband have been here for 12years but only intended staying 5years,we got married here and then had 2 children, and to be honest could'nt possibly think of going back to the uk,the sun makes everyone smile, even when its out in uk,but it as we all know we dont get long summers in uk.we are very content over here, and even if you come over and things dont work out you can always go back home, its only 4hrs away, nothing ventured nothing gained,so go for it you wont be dissapointed.

Hi I completely agree with everyone. Tenerife is great. I lived there myself for a year and if it wasn't for financial reasons I'd still be there now. I have just come back from spending a week in reef and have to say that it seemed really busy which was tremondous to see. If you have money and really want to move over to Tenerife, don't listen to a the minority telling you how bad it is. Go with your instinct and move over there - trust me you will not regret it. Good luck to you.
