Does anyone know any good Spanish literature other than the obvious, Cervantes?

Does anyone have any ideas on serious Spanish books (fiction, novels)? This question has been prompted by the thread on language, where postings ask why schools teach French and German rather than Spanish, and I think that the reason is a historical one, from the good old days when people actually read books. French and German have a recognised literature, but I for one have great difficulty finding decent books written in Spanish by a Spanish author. I hope some outraged student of Spanish will correct me here, but I am not aware of much tradition in Spanish literature.

I have tried a few South American authors who are well worth reading (Allende, Garbo etc) but find the vocabulary disturbing because I need to concentrate on Castillan, not South American Spanish.

Bookshops seem to offer lots of books in Spanish translated from English or German. Any ideas?

I need to seriously stretch my brain to remember what we read in sixth form and I doubt that any would interest you anyway. I'll get back to you.

Please do not stretch it so far that your infinitive splits.

My Mood:
Why not google "spanish literature reading lists". You will get hits from universities etc that set out these lists. Maybe difficult to source the books in Tenerife though.

i am a big fan of isabel allende, one of the most gifted contemporary authors, i think. but to go a bit deeper, apart from cervantes, gabriel garcía gárquez, though he is columbian. the generación del 27 was agroup of authors in the late 20ies of the 20th century, luis cernuda, vicente aleixandre , pedro salinas and jorge guillén, just to name a few. me personally love vicente aleixandre, mostly known for his poems...this one is actually the ultimate poem, imho....

el ultimo amor
EL ÚLTIMO AMOR

I
no quedó bien cerrada.
No vuelve.
Descansa.
Te envuelve dulcemente la oscuridad, y lentamente te borra.
Todavía respiras. Duerme.
Duerme si puedes. Duerme poquito a poco, deshaciéndote, desliéndote
¿No oyes? No, ya no oyes. El puro
silencio eres tú, oh dormido, oh abandonado,
oh solitario.

Volví, y me senté.
Silenciosamente cerré la puerta yo mismo.
Sin ruido. Y me senté. Sin sollozo.
Sereno, mientras la noche empezaba.
La noche larga. Y apoyé mi cabeza en mi mano.
Y dije...
Pero no dije nada. Moví mis labios. Suavemente, suavísimamente.
Y dibujé todavía
el último gesto, ese
que yo ya nunca repetiría.

I have a few copies of the books my girlfriends father wrote. He was a journalist/author/politician in Venezuela and passed away a few years ago.
There´s a link here talking about his last book. I´ll see if we have an emailable text copy anywhere.

Ah, just read about the problems with South American Spanish... ah well, offers still there.
