What is the story behind this shrine?

We were out walking today accross the national park area in Palm Mar. We came accross a shrine, close to a small derilict building that said in English, Adelin Kirchner died here in February 2006. We were wondering how this came to be and who this person was? It is a beautiful little shrine with candles around it. Just curious as it is in the middle of the parkland.

If you Google the name, you will find some Dutch (Flemish?) text saying that the 60 year old man died suddenly whilst on holiday. I remeber hearing someone had died hiking in the Rasca ...
