Information about the British Consulate and the emergency surgery in the South

They should be answering their phone, Hookie, they just work reduced hours during July and August, but they are there. You are ringing 922 286 863, aren' t you? They aren't the best with accurate and prompt opening hours, but core times at this time of year should be 9 to 1.30 (1pm on Friday).

If you get no joy, try sending a fax ... I've always found it a bit more successful than emails with them. Fax number is 928 289 903 (I know it's a Gran Canaria number, but it's the fax number for the Tenerife consulate ... the Las Palmas one has a different number).

Emergency passports do indeed exist, and you should be able to get one under these circumstances. Good luck, and all very best wishes to your mother.

Kirsty the lady at the consulate (Cristina) told me they have a surgery here in the south on Thursday and Monday mornings. These surgery's are from 10 until 1.30 and are by appointment only. To make an appointment call the consulate 922 286 653. Hope this helps someone else as well.

I thought are prays would be answered with the Consulate having an ofice here in the south. Far from it. The woman was less than helpful and simply says for more complicated issues everything has to be sent to Madrid and the office here is not able to confirm if even Madrid could resolve it.

The issue, our little one's name was misspelt by the clerk so the birth certificate is not valid and for the sake of one letter, even though the Libro de Familia is correct, the registro is not allowed to issued a new certificate and therefore the passport cannot be issued.

So we have to send it all off to Madrid, with a cover letter in our bestist Spanish and pray they accept the error and issue a passport. I'll let you all know how helpful or flexible Madrid is.
